View Full Version : lookin for critique
Mr Smite 04-24-2008, 02:18 AM I was looking for some thoughts and recommendations on this piece:

Are there glaring lighting discrepencies, or other noteable issues? Right now the scabbard is creating an 'X' with the sword which I think draws the eyes down towars the knees, so I'm thinking about moving the scabbard to a more verticle position, behind the leg.
I still have a couple things I already plan to mess with; the shadow on the ground is more a placeholder at present, I'm gonna get a better, more accurately mapped one down there. The right gauntlet sits a little funny, so I'm considering sliding the entire forearm and sword out a little. I'm working on multiple layers, so it'll be fairly easy to slice'n'dice changes.
And the nose confounds me some.

hehe, you already know what to work on so...
Well personally, I didn't even notice the whole X shape you were writting about until you mentioned it.
I don't find it that distracting because the colors aren't has bright as those you used on the upper body, so the focus lies on the upper body!
I think it's a cool drawing.

Thanks. I wanted to get a fresh set of eyes on it, felt like I'd been staring at it too long. And I really haven't spent much time on the chrome-ball effect, so perhaps I'm paranoid about that as well.
Still, if anyone has some suggestions, I'd love to hear 'em.

I'm not sure the sword is thick enough.

Ouch! I think you're right about the sword. I'm looking through a book right now, and it's fine for a 15th C. German sword, but then there's this picture of a 14th C. English sword that looks like it'll take limbs off, no questions asked. I think I might have to mess with that...
UPDATE:

I fixed a few things, such as the arms. Which, incidently, I still could keep working on, but I'm gonna have to take a hit there.
I still don't really like the shadow, I'll probably cut that down a bit. Otherwise, it's almost done.

Okay, probable final update, though I'd love to hear any more tips or comments on 'im.

Tweaked the sword, brightened the front of the tunic, and made some other minor changes. Still gonna try messing with the shadow, but I think it's beaten me.

Hey, I know a pretty useful technique to get the shadow down a lot easier than just drawing it as you see it. Outline the character with the selection tool, then copy the selection, fill the selection with whatever color you want the shadow to be, then transform the selection and place it on the ground under the guy, blur the edges and you should be good to go.

I think it's a great concept art piece and really well executed.
I think my only critique would be the lighting on the lower legs and feet doesn't seem to correspond with that of the upper body. It would be understandable if he was standing behind a table or something but of course as he's stand alone we don't get this impression.
But otherwise. Think it's great.

Wrapping up:

As always, suggestions are welcome, but I'm pretty much out of time and have to move on to other things now.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to comment on it.
I might enter it in that more spit-polished section of the forum in a day or two...

Thanks for the comment! I was wondering if you could be a little more specific? Is he bending or tilted to one side, or something not lining up right?

In fact after taking a second looking on your illustration, il think that's no problem. The reflect on the breastplate makes me wrong. sorry
