I need to know....is there any way to render out just the lighting layer in maya? I need to composite the lights into a live action scene....and i need to know how to render out the lights without any geometry. Thanks in advence guys.

Search in help for "surface shader" and click on "surface materials". You'll find there "use background". It's an example how to render shadows, etc.

i guess what im trying to find out, is if there is any way to make the maya lights actually illuminate the footage. theres a composited explosion in the scene, which looks fine, but of course in reality, the walls and objects in the scene would illuminate when the explosion takes place.

You need to model some "stand up" geometry (to receive the lights) and map it with the "use background" shader. You also need your footage maped as the camera background.
