View Full Version : Sub-surface scattering-wich renderer?
Rivendale 05-14-2003, 12:02 AM Hi, I really love what sub-surface scattering does to surfaces and I now feel I have to try it out. So I'd like to know which renderer is the best and easiest/fastest to use for this. Is there one that is fast enough for use in animation? Is there a free plug-in that does it?
I'm using MAX5, thanks.

As far as I know the only "free" renderer that does this for max is the V-Ray Demo. It's worth checking out.
For commercial renderers you can use V-Ray, finalRender or Brazil r/s to do this.
Here's a quick example done in V-Ray:

ive had real troubles with sub surface in final render. Vray is supposed to be better for that, but all take ages to canculate and render! thats my 2p's worth.

Check the rendertime in my sample image above.

"edit"
have you tried sub surface scattering in animations using V-Ray?

if i'm not mistaken... in vray free you couldn't do sss... if you want to test all the features of vray, you should give vray demo a try.
Yes, that is correct. There is no SSS in the free VRay version.

Ok, thanks, I'll give the V-Ray demo a try.
egz- nice image. 1 minute to render that doesn't seem so long for a complex shape like that. What kind of machine do you have?
When I come to think of it, Sub-surface scattering HAS been used in animation. Gollum in Two Towers had it, but that was probably an in-house solution for it.
If anybody has any more images or animations of SSS at work I'd love to see them, thanks.
I have a dual Athlon 2100+ with 2GB of ram.

Vray is the best. The latest demo verison is mostly unlimited - just that the settings are locked - will produce high quality renders - just slower render times than would otherwise be neccessary.
