For my first challenge ever I'll be doing Tik Tok from Return to Oz. His overall body shape is fairly simple but he has a lot of nice details that I'd like to focus on, like the instruction panel on his back, winders, the medal on his chest etc.

I'll post my reference shortly...

looking great so far, only one crit. you might wanna check the area where the legs join. i think maybe the legs come out too far before bending down, judging against the ref pics you posted

Thanks guys!

And DaezD, I totally agree with you about the thigh area. It didn't feel right when I was modeling it either, so I'll definitely be fixing that.

The mustache lines aren't quite right, but I at least wanted a first pass at them.

Not 100% sure that the thing on the back of his head is correct. I'll need to find clearer reference for it.

Please see this one through to the end as I only got to see Return to Oz for the first time on Christmas Eve thats just been. Brilliant film.

Your version of Tik is very close and a sterling effort so far. Chuck in a Wheeler or two and it'll win.

Haven't had much time to model, but here are of the detail elements on Tik Tok's back. The text is just beveled font.

Does anyone know of a quick, clean method for making poly fonts (other than from scratch)? I use the "Create Text" tool, then create curves from it and bevel, but it requires so much cleaning up of the faces that in the end, like here, I left it at the original bevel, so the front face has a ton of sides.....

Definitely coming along nicely!

As for the text... That's about the easiest way I know of, but there may be better settings you could use when converting NURBS to polys. Could you post a screenshot with the wireframe of the text, so we can see what it's like now?

(You could also use the curves as a stencil and use the Create Poly tool to make the letters by hand.. But I see there's a huge commemorative-plaque block to be made; that's prolly not a good way to go :surprised)

Thanks Chris, here's a sample of my text using BevelPlus. I'm actually creating the letter by going straight to polys from the curve. This method leaves me with the multi-facted front face, which also requires a lot of clean-up if I wanted good topology. But maybe I'll experiment with more conversion from nurbs methods and see which one has the best result.

Another detail on Tik Tok's chest. I realize the "Semper Honore" should be engraved into the banner vs sticking out, but this is my temporary solution since I couldn't get my boolean to work. I might end up just using a displacement map

You've got some really good details going on there, looking forward to seeing it finished.

There's still a lot to do, but I haven't posted in a while, so here's my progress:

I haven't gotten around to fixing too many of the issues mentioned in previous posts, just trying to get all my elements together to see what it looks like. The texture is also just a placeholder. I'm missing some pretty obvious things like the belt on the upper arm and the instruction plate, sockets for the legs, but it's coming together....

It is really looking good! Only got about 10 days left. Hope you can get it done. Great work!
