A drawing of my favorite game character Snake from the cover of MGS2 Sons of Liberty. I used the box as a reference obviously. Im kinda happy with how its coming out.. Im pretty novice so to me this is actually a decent piece.

Without first reading, I recognized the character (he's also one of my favorite gaming characters). I suggest defining more of the features (particularly the nose and mouth) and blocking in the colours right away, it'll help you with the overall composition. Can't wait to see updates! Sophie

I don't know if you're working in Photoshop (I think you are), but what you can do is create a separate layer and block in the colours, meaning add the colours in big shapes. They don't necessarily have to have details, just enough 'blobs' to give you a rough idea where you're going with the composition, lighting, colors, etc. Here's an example of what I mean. This was a sketch of something I'm working on, and I blocked in some colors to tell me where the light source was, the colors I was going to use and the dynamic of her movements:

ahh ok i gotcha.. so i would make the color block layer underneath and then go over it? How do you turn the blobs of color into actual shape? do you move those colors around on the layer or do you go over them on another layer and then delete the blocks of color? hope i make sense :)

You actually build up the colors and make the shapes out of them. The layer of colors goes over your sketch, and you use the colors with a lower opacity so you still see your sketch through, but you build up the shapes with multiple passes. Eventually, it's like a sculpure, your composition will start to show.

Sorry, English isn't my native language so I may be expressing myself a bit sloppily. :/

Your english is very clear, its my comprehension that needs work :) I understand what your saying though. I wish i could see a video of what your talking about so that I can see the technique in action. It definetely makes sense though
