View Full Version : Manu Järvinen - Dual Demoreels 2008

Hello

I decided to make two demoreels of my production this year.

It's nice to have one mainly for employment (animation reel) and one for fun (general)!
The general reel basically just sums up my whole production from period 2000-2008, I like watching my 'whole life going past my eyes' :)

With the general reel I've also pretty much broken every rule that comes to making a good demoreel (the crappiest stuff is first, it's long, it's full of annoying effects, the cuts are super-rapid, and the music will probably drive any potential employer crazy) - so I also had to make one that makes more sense (the animation reel) - even though I'm not too happy with that either, at least lenght-wise.

Also, make sure you check out the 60fps -version of my general reel!
maxon is going real-time here!

I hope you like them! :D

(btw, I'm trying for Pixar Animation Internship this year, wish me luck :p )

the animation reel is awesome, I liked your style a lot in animation ...

ya, something else ... I have been following your works scince a looooong tme, the old chair, the crazy phone, the box ... all of them were (and still) greet insperation for me ...

good luck in your Internship, I don't know what can we see after that :applause:

Both reels are really awesome, i envy you a bit. I was wondering if the music in the general reel is from tipper, because i am a huge fan of him as well.

Thumbs up!

i've seen your works before, some of them at least.
great animation reel for most part. just something about ur general reel:
the fast change+movement of the camera kinda bugs me, i dont really get to see your work. it's all moving too quick. that's just me :hmm:

Good luck! ;)

Thank you, thank you all! :) :)

Yeah the general reel sure is way too fast-paced in order to see everything there's on it. I hope the people who see that just decide to visit my webpage to check out the images with time.

DonRallo - yeah it took about a week to make both of them :/

Thank you all :)

I'm blown away at how good your lighting and rendering look.

You also made me lose faith in myself seeing saw how young you are and that you've only been doing 3d for 3 years. :p

Looking at your site and finding images like this (http://cgi.evtek.fi/%7Emanuj/website/contents/quickies/20070710_Sateenvarjo.jpg) explains some. You must be from some other dimension making images likes that in less than two hours. :O

Top notch work.

Maybe some time we'll see some tips or maybe even a small tutorial from you on how to achieve those cartoon like, but still very solid looking renders? :)

Edit: Just watched your kite flyer animation. It made me laugh. :p

The first half of the animation reel is freakin awesome, great use of the principles. But all the character animation is very very weak in comparison and show's a distinct lack of those principles you showed in the earlier work.
The general Reel is incredible :)

That work is just spectactular. I can't really see you having a problem getting into Pixar at all. In fact, your styles rather like them, but in a more twisted sense if you get what I mean.
Animation isn't weak at all

That is propably THE most awesomely unique demo reel I have ever seen.

The only thing I don't like is the hand that lights the zippo - I don't really see the 2D and the 3D element match. But don't take that as critique, I only bring it up because everything else is perfect!

You should be able to get a job anywhere. The companies will be calling you.

Watched both the General and the Animation reels.

Both are awesome, very well put together and contain some really good work. :)

The animation one was more entertaining, only due to timing with the movement on screen.

Good work, good luck with getting into Pixar. :)

That was purely amazing. The presentation and the beat was CRAZY!!!

Youre dynamics are out of this world.

The telephone drove me nuts.

I have never found one tutorial on how to do a cord perfectly like that.

Can you please share your setup/technique on the cord?

Keep rocking. Your work is tops.

WOW! I really loved your 60fps version. Incredibly snappy.
I think I've seen your donut-animation from the gathering, is that correct?

I just love the telephone ringing, lol.
Very inspiring, and I really dig the ultrafast cuts. Really reminds me of the good ol' days of amiga demos.

Good luck on the pixar internship. You got my vote.

I noticed you use Maya as your software if i'm correct? But i'm curious about how you get those extremely nice renders (so toony and 'shiny'. Everything is like sirup. Beautifull!) and how you (for example) managed to make a chair of that little ball. I've watched it frame by frame and noticed some moments where things 'really changed' but overall i was really astonished... and that's amazing, even when I was watching it frame by frame, trying to get rid of the magic you created.. it still was like magic.

Why don't you make a tutorial about your shaders and lighting, or your animation techniques. Or why don't you record your process of creation of a small project you're working on.

I'd love to know how you do it all.

I've put you and almost all your work in my inspiration folder,.. astonishing work. Just awesome en wonderful. 5*s

Thank you all for the nice comments :D I appreciate them all!

Maybe some time we'll see some tips or maybe even a small tutorial from you on how to achieve those cartoon like, but still very solid looking renders?
Thank you very much :) It sure would be nice to make a tutorial about cartoon-like rendering, but the thing is I don't really have a solid method in what I do. It's basically experimenting all around. Hopefully my old Like a Bull -tutorial (http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials_3/making_of_like_a_bull/making_of_like_a_bull01.asp) helps even a bit.

The first half of the animation reel is freakin awesome, great use of the principles. But all the character animation is very very weak in comparison and show's a distinct lack of those principles you showed in the earlier work.
Thanks. Yeah, that's why the character-stuff is basically at the end of the clip. I've never used a good amount of time onto character animation yet, been too busy with making polished nonsense-clips. But I'm sure that it'll be soon that I decide to put all the effort only on character.

That work is just spectactular. I can't really see you having a problem getting into Pixar at all.
Thank you Kage :) I really hope it would be so (a couple of weeks waiting ahead til I know how it's going to be)
But thinking about what job will those Animation Mentor graduates first try to apply for...

WoW your one of the most talented people i ever seen in this site! your work has 100% personality it's unique! fantastic style modeling and animation! i know that i will ask for much but i would really love to explain me how you achieved this transfomations the materials and the fur spots on the chair animation clip!
Awesome! Thanks for the intense comment :D

The chair animation sure is full of cheats, that's why it looks like that. The fur/fabric is fully drawn in Photoshop. Frame by frame. It was very hard work, but still didn't take longer than a couple of days, because the clip is very short.

I have never found one tutorial on how to do a cord perfectly like that. Can you please share your setup/technique on the cord?
Sure, I used the 3ds Max's Reactor rope for a spline and a bone-chain in which the speaker+cord were skinned to. (Sorry, I'm not good at explaining and I can't really even remember). Though if I was to make that whole clip again, I certainly wouldn't make it with the same method. That old method required an intense amount of test-simulations, and every time the speaker acted differently - it was a nightmare.

The better method is to make it like this: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=6&t=306451 (some of the links don't work, but this clip (http://koti.mbnet.fi/sinko/host/johto.avi) shows how it should work)

think I've seen your donut-animation from the gathering, is that correct?
Almost correct. It was the Breakpoint '08 demoparty. Like it says here: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=50101

I noticed you use Maya as your software if i'm correct?
Um, actually Maya was only used for the character-animations. In the Breakdown-sheet (http://cgi.evtek.fi/%7Emanuj/website/contents/demoreel/Manu_Jarvinen_Animation_Demoreel_2008_Shotlist.pdf) you can see what software I used in which clip.
... and that's amazing, even when I was watching it frame by frame, trying to get rid of the magic you created.. it still was like magic. Why don't you make a tutorial about your shaders and lighting, or your animation techniques. Or why don't you record your process of creation of a small project you're working on.
Hehe, I'm glad to hear about 'magic that can't be seen even in frame-by-frame' :D That truly sounds like I've done my job well :) - - But yeah, the whole thing is just a tight combination of 3D, compositing and 2D-frame-by-frame-animation.

I hope this Like a Bull -tutorial helps at least a bit: http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials_3/making_of_like_a_bull/making_of_like_a_bull01.asp
