I've been reading Rui Batista's 'COFFEE- The Book' and coded my first plugin using it. It's not overwhelmingly exciting but maybe someone will find it useful.

'Commentator' is a plugin which allows you to add free text notes to your scene files. All you do is attach a Commentator tag to any object, then type your text into the box which appears. You can also use this tag to set a deadline for a task along with the due date and the person it's assigned to.

You can download it (http://www.microbion.co.uk/graphics/c4d/commentator.htm) from my site if you would like to try it. Feedback very welcome!

Cool. Thanks for sharing.

It's good to see people benefitting from Rui's book.

Thanks for this.

Saves the trouble of creating a User Data field with a "string" type to leave comments. One thing that User Data fields offer is the ability to add the content of the field to the HUD - is there any way that your Commentator tag could load its contents to the HUD?

Nice little tool. Good to see Rui's book getting put to use.
It works fine on Mac OSX 10.4.11.
Drag the tag or multiple tags into the HUD for quick access.

Thank's for sharing.

Cheers, Alan.

Yep, tried dragging the tag into the 3D view and it shows up, no problem. Clicking on the tag in the HUD brings up the contents - it's the tag contents themselves I''m trying to display in the HUD, without having to click on the tag. That way, I can render out the contents in the HUD, when needed.

Hello, thanks for the plugin. I have just starter with the book. I hope I will manage to post some plugin in next months. But at first I would like to recommend the book for everybody, who would like to start with COFFEE. It's really useful (and funny).

Thanks for your comments, everyone - it's really encouraging to get some feedback.

One thing I want to do is have the data displayed in the attributes manager without opening the dialog, as happens with most other tags, but I have a feeling that this can't be done with COFFEE plugins. If I can do it, that should also answer the HUD issue as well. Otherwise I'll have to resurrect my moribund C++ skills :-)

Steve,

Thanks again for taking the time to code and share your tag (and for clarifying the HUD/contents issue) - it's folks like you who add such great value to an already terrific 3D app.

WOW!!!

It is great to see the fruits of my work :)
I'm very, very happy with what people are doing, after reading my book. :)
Oh, by the way, I'm already planning a "part 2" book. It will be an addendum to the COFFEE book, teaching more advanced stuff. I decided to do it after my programming skills got more advanced, while coding a particularly complex plug-in (still in the works ;))

Hi Rui,

Well, it's a great book and I enjoyed using it to code a plugin - something I'd always wanted to have a go at. If you're doing a part 2, I'll be in the queue waiting to buy it!
