CGTalk - Merging vertices

When extruding a face , I know how to merge the resulting vertices but is there a way that Maya can automatically do this while I extrude so I don't constantly have to manually merge everything? I'm learning Maya now so I could be overlooking something.

Polygons -> Tool Options -> Keep Faces Together
