Ok, here are some thoughts:

Has anyone here tried to make crowd animation with Maya's particles? If so, can you elaborate a little?

I have in mind to generate a particle behaviour simillar to the crowd scene I want to achive, but instead of particle instance for geometry, I'd like to use RIB Boxes with prebaked motion files (with or without geometry in them). Now, if someone is willing to discuss this initial pitch of an idea....
Also, I've heard about this ai.implant but haven't used it, any comments on that one?

Hmmmm, create a big crap load of curves in the shape of the crowd (is the crowd on multiple levels?) with a tun of CVs....

hm, interesting note about using curves...It would work if I didn't have in mind interaction with environment and with other crowd (battle scene). And, yes, they are on multiple levels, but I consider each level as a separate scene, so it doesn't matter. I'm most concerned with interaction between two (actually, 3) crowd systems. For environment I'll use a carrot and stick principle.

BTW, how can you add an image in your profile?

I have recently worked on a project involving schools of fish. Jeez, lots of fish and one condition: they had to look and move just like the real ones.
I studied a lot of discovery documentaries and went through a lot of "research".
I started to look up for crowd simulation engines and techniques to develop software for such. Writing a plug-in using a colision basis was my first thought. But when I was just about to start I realized it would be a pain in the ass and I couldn't afford the time to meet my dead line.
So I designed a entire "fish motion scene system" in Maya (that's how I call it and that's what it is). Basically it's a custom system of several particle systems run by multible fields, instances, geometry, goals, creation and runtime expressions, all also run by a master Mel script which enables to control several aspects of these systems, one by one or as an entire group and also switching modes like singular systems, group systems or a single group. Combined with some instancing scripts I came up with made it look it awsome and now I'm implementing this into a plug-in to create several other kinds of crowd.
They started to make fun of me saying I'm not human, but a fish with lungs.
Ouch!
