Oh wow, all these great replies already! Thanks everyone.
Huge print rez version (1.8M) here (http://www.users.on.net/%7Egjpetch/temp/images/bunny_l.jpg)
The knitted jumper is geometry, which was made using a couple of plugins, decorate (http://www.monkeylab.com.au/rd/Plugin_MonkeyDecorate/MonkeyDecorate_Documentation.htm), by an ex colleague of mine Roger Fransen, and clone (http://www.itoosoft.com/english/menu.php?id=clone) by itoo software. So, I modelled one stitch of knitting using renderable splines, then two clone modifiers to make it into a flat surface, then decorate to conform that over a low resolution model of the jumper. Finally, I scattered some fine fluffy hairs over the jumper, which helped to make it look soft.
Unfortunately decorate is max8 only :( If anyone interested in writing max plugins wants to steal the idea for decorate then go for it, Roger has moved on to bigger and better things so won't be updating it anytime soon, and its a shame not having such a cool plugin in newer versions of max.

Awesome Job Greg, really incredible!
The only think I don't really 'like' are the eyes. Especially the one which is more open. I does not look very believable to me. Don't know why exactly, but it's the shape that feels a bit unrealisic to me.
But besides that, absolutely great work!
F***ing brilliant!
The jumper & fur is absolutely fantastic.
One thing though - the detail in the print res image is awesome & it's great that you're sharing it with people here... BUT as you've made it available I wouldn't be surprised if you start to see this artwork reproduced in places you hadn't planned, without your permission.
Sorry if that seems a little cynical, but it's a great piece of work & I don't want to see you ripped off.

I don't usually post in these huge threads full of praise but... this is crazy good. It just goes to show how much going the extra mile with detail and lighting can produce inspirational images. I think it is made by the fact that she obviously isn't real... it creates a wierd kind of hyper-reality.

Thanks so much everyone, I always end up feeling disapointed with my own work, its easy to be very self critical, so its great to get such a positive response.
This image may explain the process of making the jumper a bit better, as I said earlier its done using the 3dsmax plugins "clone" and "decorate".

SlayerCZ, AndyH, ivanisavich, Miguel Ortega, mv, Antropus, etc. Thanks guys, kind words from talents like you means a lot.
azynkron, yep, Yoda did come to mind as I was making her, & perhaps a bit of Yubaba from Spirited Away, among other inspirations.
Oli4D, I agree about the eye. I meant to re-do the eyeball, and re-sculpt the face a bit, but got too fed up with it to bother in the end.
AJ, Obviously I don't want people to use the image for commercial purposes without my permission, but if it does happen..... frankly it doesn't bother me that much. Besides, I doubt they'd have much luck selling a product with an image like this.
Visionmaster2, Yep, decorate does work with animation. It does slow down a little bit on heavier meshes, but turning down the tolerance, turning off the gizmo, and obviously turning off any meshmooths makes it speed up. I think its a great tool, and Rogier wrote it really quickly, over a weekend I think. Lets just hope it gets recompiled for newer versions of max.
QuantumAnomoly, hehe, yeah, I have thought of doing an attractive girl in 3d, but I don't think I can compete with the real thing, or with guys like Stahlberg who have that market cornered. I'll do it the day I can think of an idea seems interesting, and doesn't make me feel like a lonely nerdy perv:D
You know, I haven't thought of Bill and Teds Bogus Journey for years, but now you mention it I (embarrassingly enough) really liked that movie when I was a kid, subliminal inspiration perhaps?

Amazing!!!I like it.
I think this is the best work I have seen for a long time. Technically is great, the modelling, texturing, lighting... and this pullover... awesome!
But the best thing of the image for me is the grandma's face expression, everytime I see her face I can't help laughing, is really great!! I think that the size of the head and the little legs contribute to make it more funny.
I have no critics, 5 stars.
Congrats for the job and the award Greg.

My only small crit is the dark doorway in the background and the exit sign.
Sorry for the small crit, but fabulous work.
No problem, crits are useful. My thinking about the doorway and the exit sign was that they could be taken as an allegory for death..... but perhaps thats only clear to me, so thats a fair criticism. I had meant to stick a hidden image in the doorway that could only be seen by cranking up the brightness. Its a chair with a skull sitting on it, but after jpeg compression and the film grain I added its unfortunately pretty much unrecognisable.
can you tell us brief view about how you did the cloth and the ground shaders
The main thing was to use a little bit of "Roughness" in the vray material, and a little bit of falloff in the diffuse to make the glancing angles brighter.

This is amazing! The fabrics are incredible. What did you use to make her sweater? The movement, light and texture are so real!

For over the past year I have been visiting nursing homes that my grandparents belong to. My eyes always catch on the older men and women who didn't have family visiting...the ones that would sort of look at you with no words to mouth.
Sometimes your not sure if it's rude to say "hello" because you don't want them to know how akward you feel when you stare back at them.
The innocence of the stuffed rabbit is amazing. It's like she is looking for one last thing that depends on her in her quiet life.
If this were a pass/fail quiz I would give you ten stars.
Thanks for sharing your brilliance.
