Is there a way to add a command to Mute the current key(s) in the timeline. Like how the channel box has Mute Selected and Mute All.
Often when I want to work on a chunk of animation in the clean up stage I just have to deal with what is on either side but it would be nice if there was a way I could mute the animation for whatever I highlight on the timeline.
Is this possible?

Or is there another way to acheive the same thing?

You could get the current animCurves, plug a multiply devide node on the connection and set it to multiply by 0.

(You could even animate the multiply value making it kind of animation layer. I evaluated this for making animation layer script for maya. But I couldn't figure how to script a addition-node to the connection. Thats what you'd need. Multiply is wrong for that purpose)
