View Full Version : Dave Johnson - Animation Demo Reel - April 2008
ThreeDave 04-20-2008, 10:03 PM Hi Everyone!
Well I'm technically finished with my classes at Animation Mentor, though I am retaking the final quarter at my own choice to continue to polish my short film. I'll post that up at a later date, but for now I thought I'd get some feedback on my demo reel.

The link to the movie can be found here: DEMO REEL (19.8 MB) (http://www.3dave.com/animation/davejohnson_demoreel.mov)
I learned a ton from my time at "The Ment," but I know I've got a LONG way to go. So if you've got feedback on what I can do to improve, I'd love to hear it!

3Dave!
Great to see you're work. Animation Mentor is one of the schools I'm considering, but I have a couple of questions ...
- Would you recommend Animation Mentor?
- Do you feel that Animation Mentor offers adequate software training as well as their focus on animation training?
- Does the program cover 3D character modelling in any detail?
- Finally, Did the online nature of the school work for you?
Thanks a bunch. I really appreciate anything you can offer!

Just as an FYI, I answered these questions offline, via email. Just didn't want anyone to think I was ignoring the questions! ;)
If anyone has additional comments on the reel, I'd love to hear them!

Great work :) Would you mind PMing me those answers as well? I'm considering AM. Appreciate it.

I really like the dog, and i LOVE your 2d art.
Your animation was, for the most part, very good. There were a few things that I didnt like though
0:17 - when he raises his leg, it looks very fake and forced. IF you want him to curl up like that, his face needs to scrunch together in terror. Also, just before when he dropped the pills, he needs to really flail his arms into the air. This whole part of the scene hes supposed to be scared, but his body is moving in a relaxed manner.
1:02 - this pull anim. The only parts that bother me is when hes fully extended and pulling as hard as he can. His body comes far too close to stopping moving. He needs some shaking in his arms or face, or anywhere. He needs some jittery motion to show that hes trying really hard to pull, rather than just standing in the pose. I like the stretch of the arm a lot though.
Those two things were your biggest problems for me. It was a solid reel though. I bet you can land a job off of this :)
