Great compositing from what I can tell from the compression used.

Looks like this project was fun to create

I am so amazed. The soundtrack was awesome, who did it? Where can I get a copy of it? The timing of the drop in the melody when the strange ribbon phantom appears was perfect and creepy.

I wouldn't normally complain about the live action stuff but the cg is so good that the live action stuff brings it down a bit.

too bad about the cheap live action.

but those spaceships sure look very impressive.

and remember 3rdeye. the artist. not the tool. or isnt it ? ;)

If the tools are equally good it's the artist, not the tool. But if it was only the artist and not the tool we'd all use Bryce.

Thats the best dutch compositing/3D job yet.
(i see a large market opening up here..)

Hope to see more of that stuff soon.

Regarding the live action I believe they did the effects for a film school or something like that so the live action was not by a professional studio or anything.

I love C4D, and I love naam... I also understand they didn't have a professional studio for the live animation....

But that live animation really really hurts this. Who's the guy with the red eyes that just stands there? what's going on? why is it happening.

The graphics are top notch! As are the dynamics, I love them! but the live cuts and the "thrown together" story hurt the movie considerably.

Oh god... I'm gonna get jumped on by other c4d users for this....

Wow, that was some excellent work, great space debree scenes, great modeling on the ships. A bit hard to follow, can we download the whole thing somewhere?

It really rocks!!

The live action is up to Dutch tv standards :hmm:.
The CG however is just great (especially the dynamics  ) and I hope Happy Ship will get a lot of good publicity so they can do bigger and better jobs. So they need more artists and hire me :D just dreamin...

(i see a large market opening up here..)Lets hope this will open up the gates for 3D (and preferably C4D) in The Netherlands :wavey:.
Because from what I've read it's crap right now I'm terms of opportunities, budgets and payments.

That's why I love Happy Ships approach, they started out just doing their own stuff and gradually get paid jobs like this.

BTW, Why isn't Naam here on CG Talk? Somebody should get him over here ;).

Hehe, dreaming about that too Harry?
Doing 3d school now and gradually finding out you are on your own if you want to get a job in 3d in Holland. Really sorry about it, maybe this really cool short would open up the public's eyes and give people that idea of "Hey I want that in my show too!!". That'the part where whe jump in :p .
Can't wait to see it air on BNN! :bounce:

Wooohoo great work out of tha happy ship production.

Like the animated wire alot with the claws alot. For the live action? Hmm maybe not take it as cheap production material but as a special style the wanted to achieve? My thoughts!

Great music as usual from happyship

Like the design, but i have three buts for you..

It is mentioned earlier:

- Change the music (more different type)
- Add more sound effects!! really important!
and
- (not something you easely change) storyline is hard to follow.

But as we say is dutch:

""Goed gedaan man!! "

(Well done!)

For the people who don't know what the story is about: this trailer is a compilation of the small movie made by students. Happyship made animation (all done in cinema 4d). Naam was responsible for the 3D animation, lighting and effects (and again he did an excellent job).
So this piece is just a compilation to show off their work. I guess the full movie comes with more sound effects and a true story line.
Its supposed to be broadcasted on festivals and by a dutch broadcaster BNN this summer).
(I got this info from the thread where Naam originally posted: http://www.postforum.com/forums/read.php?f=6&i=79378&t=79277)
Hopefully Naam is able to comment here himself.

They are professionals, i believe,
and the effects are still top-notch, professional or not.

especially for dutch standards.

Neat, though I coulden't follow the storyline.

Coen

The 3d in this movie is simply astounding.

I saw the movie twice when it was presented for the filmacademy, and believe me, it wasn't enough to follow the story.

Apparently they had to cut some twenty minutes to conform it to the timeslot for television :D

Thanks for the kind words all! I finally managed to understand how to post here, was kind of aggravating reading all those mails and not being able to explain some misconceptions. Gladly rirad took care of some of them.

The reel you saw was a special FX showoff reel, made for the Animago awards show (we won 5th place overall out of 1140 with the full film :) as well as first places in two categories) so logically there isn't much of a story there. Almost all FX shots are in there, though :) The music is from the film as well, that is, it's a song based on the theme, made by the fellow who did the music. Hence a little lack of sound effects.

Happy Ship just did the 3D (ships, space, debris, some FX and the smoke), a lot of compositing wizardry went into it as well, which was taken care of by PlanetX FX, who, coincidentally, are the students whose exam-project it was. And yes, seems we (HS) must call ourselves professionals by now, just lucky ones still able to doing projects like this!

As far as the story and acting go (you can't really get an idea of the acting from the reel shown though) you have to consider that PlanetX had a lot of trouble getting the school (NFTA) to believe they could do a full Science Fiction movie, so there was a lot of messing around with the script. And one actor in particular had no idea about the scope of the project, so they actually _had_ to turn him into a robot in the end :) Which actually worked pretty decent, considering his performance.

So, hope that clears some of it up :) Questions, just ask ;)

one question.

is naam one person or a company or what.

I mean I thought it was a company, but then people refer to naam as an individual.

just wondering about this if someone can clear this up for me.

"Mooi werk indeed."

I still can't believe that is done with CInema 4d! It looks better than Star Trek *ducks for cover* ! :bounce: Animations like these are an inspiration for me to keep on pushing and trying to get (not even) near that kind of perfection. I do have one question, since the movie is 20 minutes long and I see many work is 3d, this must have taken very long to finish! Not to speak of render times! :buttrock: I am interested to know how long a project like this would take to complete?
Thumbs up to the whole team and hope to see you around here some time Naam!

Well admittedly I lost track of time during the project :). I think our involvement was about half a year, but we got into the project later on. As far as 3D is concerned, it'd be half a year plus some extra time for modelling (some models were largely done when we stepped in). What also helped was that PlanetX already had a detailed animatic in -very- basic 3D, so there wasn't too much time lost in deciding camera angles and shot timing etc. As far as rendering is concerned, that was all done on our 8xAMD1G farm, which we just gotten, and it was quite indispensible! (also allowed us to do 'quick' preview renders on PAL res :)

cheers
