Title: Time to Release
Name: Enning Liang
Country: China
Software: 3ds max, mental ray, Photoshop, ZBrush

i want to reveal my emotion and feelings through this picture, something hard to express in words, maybe it's the pressure, the desire of freedom, or just the dream i see, i imagine a dragon under balls and chains, in a dark prison for holy animals. this work took me about 3 weeks to be done, and it's still incomplete and not perfect now, i have to give it up because of technical problems, more than 660 thousand polygons are nightmare for my laptop.

I agree, lighting doesn't work.

2 legs? Lighting is weird cause he's not getting any from the environment. At least you're trying to fake it some how, and its not working. Your "sphere" chain holders need better integration into the environment. The chains don't look taut enough to actually hold him there if he wanted to escape.

thanks, you're quite right, i'm still lack of experience in making the environment fit and bad at lighting and rendering, i think i should try more in some simpler scenes...

thanks, i agree too. i've tried hard, at least 4 different lightings are tested, but neither of them look ok, even though i turn on global illumination, the lighting doesn't work either. any good suggestion on how to improve it?

yeah, 2 legs...
yep, i've tried to fake it, but it's not working, why? any good ideas? i don't know how to make the "sphere" chain holders' material realistic, any good ideas? i was stupid when making the chains i think, after finishing them, i found the problem you mentioned...sigh...

2 Legs doesn't make sense for obvious mobility reasons of a dragon

lighting doesn't work because you're lighting the dragon from different angles than your key which is the window. the window means you're backlighting the dragon and you are realizing it won't be lit from the angle which the camera is facing. You need to re-evaluate your environment structure and figure out where better lighting would come from. Keep the dragon in the environment, and don't set the lights to only shine on different objects. Keep all lights on all the objects for now until you get a good overall look, then seperate lights for different parts of the image you need to bring out.

your balls are just crashing into the ground. Build geo that would hold the spheres there. Change them so they're not spheres, but chain bases.

Good job on this. It has potential to be pretty awesome. One thing is that it has two legs, which could be fine if that's you're artistic choice. I'm seeing the creature as a dinosaur with wings on it. I would have used a dinosaur as a reference, then played with the proportions and stuff a little more, or used pictures of dragons for reference and do some concept art. http://www.idrawgirls.com/images/speedcreature_dragon003.jpg (http://www.idrawgirls.com/images/speedcreature_dragon003.jpg)
http://www.dragonpicsblog.com/images/large/Big%20Green%20Dragon.jpgI'm not very experienced at lighting and rendering, so I can't really say much more than the lighting looks off. What are those random spots on the ground? The chains are what need the most work. As people already said, they aren't fastened to anything. They just come out of shiny orbs imbedded in the ground. Also, they just loop over the dragon in various places. Imagine you had a dog trapped like that. How long do you think that would hold him? It's a little different, because your dragon has horns and wings that would snag, but I think you get my point. A way to fix this would be to build some shackes to attach to the chains. Some saliva coming out of the dragons mouth would be nice, too.

If you're not going to work on this one anymore, good luck on your next project! Make sure to remember as you're working that you're telling a story, and things have to make sense to the viewer.
