Hello. I was wondering if anyone knew how do do a shadow pass in maya, and only render the shadows so that they can be composited in Aftereffects with the rest of the objects in the scene. thanks.

go to render globals ,

render layer \pass control

check enable render layers and render pass control

there you can select beauty , color , shadow , diffuse and specular to render.

hope this helps ,

or you can do the poo way and make all yoru lights cast negative intensity and make shadow colour white.

and then turn off primary visibility on the objects casting the shadow.

i think thats how it works
render passes are easier.

or you can use "use background"

Thanks alot. i tied to use the render layers, and just turn n shadows, but it didn't like that i kept on getting some wierd error,
however, i will turn off the primairy visiability, and try rendering the use background plane. Thanks alot,
Brian

look out with the render layer option in the render globals, and the objects in your scene with layered shaders... This objects apears black in the composite result. it looks a maya bug.
