hmm okay just some previsualization, to imagine how my alien should look like...
Hey Gino, nice start. Your design on an alien is really original!! Good luck and looking forward for more updates! Cheers mate

so here is the concept. an extraterrestrian holding a human baby.

Thank's for your comment Ferx, here is the next step, hope you like it.

okay, now the sketch is finished and i can begin the work. The alien is a wanderer who travels from planet to planet. it has many breathingorgans wich allows him to survive in different atmospheres.
it's really fun participating in this challenge.
i wish everyone good luck!

i started colouring the alien. took me a long time to decide wich colour i wanted, because green seemed to be a cliché-colour for an alien. but then i did it because i wasn't content with the other versions.

started painting the face with some plantlike things that grow overthere
05-03-2008, 12:27 PM
the face is quite finished now and i begin to work on the body.
05-06-2008, 06:12 PM
painting the body now
05-06-2008, 06:18 PM
now it is time to do the baby's face and the net of creepers that makes it's body safe and warm

okay, it's almost done. about nine hours of work today;) finally i added textures from photographs i took, shades and light, corrected the shapes of the face and eyes and did many other small things that improve it hopefully.

so here are my references. both pictures are from the www
for the baby
and as an inspiration for the aliens head the pietá of michelangelo (when i began i had nothing clear in mind, but thought about pictures of mother mary)

finally it's done. the alien that is appearing from the dark holds a baby in her arms which she found in the woods of the planet. maybe they have crashed and the child was the only one surviving? When found by the alien, the child was hurt and cool. The alien wrapped her tentacles around the poor thing and let grow curative creepers and moss over the body. the baby now feels better and recovers its health in the arms of a new patronising mother.
i started with the diffuse idea of doing something like mother mary and little jesus in an alien-human being relationship. what is left from the idea is the mother-child-relation and the some kind of hood that is part of the alienbody though. i had trouble doing the face of the baby because it was for the first time a drew one.
just a few days left till the end;) do your best.
oh and here are some additional words to help you understand the aliendesign:
the anthropomorphic creature has two different breathingorgans, lung and gills, so it is extremely adaptable to its environment. it is living in a symbiosis with moss that protects its body from being superheated or dried up. the moss is also connected to the creatures neural system and is so a very sensuous haptic organ. the tentacles are armored with a sort of tortoiseshell/nacre-mixture but still very flexible. the horn only grows during pairing season on the females heads, to defend themselves against the haunting male aliens;)

Oh my god! La pietá was my inspiration too! I knew there was something in it that suggests nature and plants. Maybe the image of Mother Mary resonates with our underlying conception of Mother Nature. It's interesting to see that we got to the same point through different paths.
Good luck! :)
