its been awhile since i have done any animating inside of maya. i found a free model online(credits are at bottom) and decided to do a walk cycle with it. i am doing a pose to pose workflow. below are some fast videos of just the contact poses. i am going to make sure each pose it good before i move to the next. so all the feedback yall can give will be really helpful!

I think you're definitely going about this the right way by beginning with a pose-to-pose workflow, but it's difficult for a model like this to show a great deal of variation between poses.

I'm a big fan of Kiel's rigs, and I think this one will afford you a lot of potential and flexibility in terms of things like follow-through, overlap and experimenting with weight - this creature would be so heavy, it's movements would probably be very slow and lumbering. Then again, since I'd imagine that such a creature would have a significant amount of muscle mass, perhaps a slightly faster trot would be more unusual and interesting?

Looking forward to seeing how this progresses, thanks for posting.

I think this would look weird with a light walk cycle or a fast one - make it heavy and lumbering - alot of weight shift, one foot moving then another. Need to see more poses - these vids dont give much away but would definitely like to see more :)

hey thanks. i will be updating this soon. past week had some legal things to take care of with next door neighbor so i havent had much time to work in maya. i found a walk of a komodo dragon that i think will look good for this character. its not very fast until it need to be, other then that it just takes its time because there really aint much that bothers it. i also found a video of a tiger that i might try the walk for once i finish the komodo walk but i will use the same character so you can see the difference that the walk has with it

all of a sudden after using maya 2008 for awhile, i cant use the scale or rotate tools unless i am in the side view, they wont work for any other views and snapping to points wont work neither, it will snap close to the point but not to the point. does anyone know what would cause this? its hard to model having to scale everything in the side view. thanks

so the other problem that i was having with the scale in maya 2008 fixed itself but now when i try to move around in the view port everything goes crazy. the model starts flipping in all kinds of directions and stuff. i cant do anything i go to the left in the view port but the view port goes right and down. does anyone know what might be causing this? thanks for the help.

mate you really wanna post maya techy questions in the specific forum lower down the main cgtalk page - this is a wip animation forum so your not gonna get much help with whatever the prob is with it. If I knew what the prob was I'd help you out.

hope you get it sorted - maybe try uninstall/restart/reinstall?

Maybe the original .dll file has been corrupted? I've not encountered this problem myself, though if that is the problem, you could try downloading a replacement file from here:

Failing that, I'm not sure what else you could try. Hope this works, and let us know how you get on.

hey danshewan, thanks alot. i reinstalled maya for the fifth time and all of a sudden it started working. Only thing that is wierd is that it has rotated all my viewports. what i mean is when the model is standing on the grid in perp. view, it is laying flat on the grid in the top view and the front view it is on its side and there is no front view of it. not sure what would cause this but right now i am searching the net trying to find any advice or help. i am hoping that by the end of the day i will have everything back to normal. if not i am just going to export everything out of maya 2008 as an .obj and import it into maya 7 and start working on my models in there until i get maya 2008 fix.

is there a muscle system built into 8 or 8.5? that the main thing that i really wanted to learn in Maya 2008 for a character that i was going to start once i finished the ones i was working on. thanks to everyone for the help!

when maya crashed on me i lost this project, i might re-download the character and start on it again but first i have to make up other work that i lost when maya crashed, such as Gotham
