Im trying to make the earth planet for ages, ive gotten somewhere using 3ds max, but im not satisfied with the look that much..
I have heard some people are doing matte painting of earth combining with 3d to make the realistic look, my shot is as close as viewing it from a satellite so the clouds should be nice and kind of volumetric , and that is my problem , the clouds are usually strange, ive tried different displacement methosds butnoithing is workiong that well so far/.
Please anyone having experiences or ideas do share them.
cheers

Unless you've got some extreme camera move then a matte painting is usually the best approach for this kind of thing. You could even project it onto a sphere to add in a subtle camera move.
