View Full Version : Maya 2008 caustics issue?

I'm having problems with caustics on mi materials in Maya 2008. The caustics all work naturally and fine with Maya mats, but NOT with mental ray materials for some reason?

Here's the scene with GI and FG:

Turning up the caustic scale and turning OFF the Direct Lighting Shadow Effects...

And one with no Final Gather, just to be sure...

As you can see, caustics are working on almost everything BUT the glass materials, which is the only place I need them. So I used MapViz to double-check:

It appears that the caustics aren't working on the table and chairs (which are using the mia_material) as well as the glass wine bottle and wine glasses, which use dieletric material and photon shaders.

Everything else in the scene uses basic Maya-style shaders, and the caustics are working on all those shaders:

So there's something fundamentally wrong with my application of both the dielectric shaders and the mia_material. I just upgraded from Maya 7 to Maya 2008, and this file worked fine in Maya 7. I'm curious where I'm going wrong with my shaders?

Why would dielectric shaders NOT work with the sun/sky nodes? I also inserted a simple photon-casting spotlight, and had the same problem. What am I missing here, and why do caustic photons work on simpe Maya materials but not on mental ray materials?

I'm hoping it's just a node I'm missing or something, and not a bug.

It was the mia_material node. I thought that it automatically took care of the shadow and photon slots in the main (Maya) material's shading group. Once inserted into all three, it worked fine!

This is one of those fun self-threads. Thanks for sharing, self! (grins)
