View Full Version : Digital Matte Painting and the Game Industry
Bdude619 04-15-2008, 07:32 PM Hey Everyone,
Sorry for all the questions. I hope the information gathered from my threads helps answer some questions that other people have as well.
I was wondering if anyone has any experience doing Digital Matte Painting for the Game industry. Is Digital matte Painting viable in the game industry? What parts of the Game Industry use Digital Matte Painting? Is it limited to Cinematics or could it be used for other areas of a game?
Thanks again for your time

Howdy, well think about matte painting and its intended use, it's mainly used in film, cinematics etc, but i guess a matte painter may also be asked to create an in game backdrop or sky down perhaps. I'll leave this to Jaime as he works in this field and can probably provide a better answer :)

hey, well yeah I'm in the field of cinematics, and yeah we use a lot of matte painting for our cinematics at blur, well actually we're experimenting with some other matte painting techniques to get faster and better results like multi camera projections, well this is talking about cinematics ,in the video game field, as fas as the video game itself I don't have idea ..., but well I guess they must have things like camera projections and stuff similar to the technique we use in MP. but hope somebody in the game industry can give feedback now

Thanks guys,
I was leaning toward the cinematics portion of the game industry when i made this thread. What are some of the cinematics studios out there? Do many of the Game studios themselves do the cinematics?
Is there any books or DVDs on camera mapping. I am afraid i don't know a lot about it

Studios, well you have http://www.blur.com which is one of the main contenders on the west side, here in the UK Realtimes:UK is growing quite strong: http://www.realtimeuk.com/ not too sure about other studios that specialise in cinematics, Jaime?
Camera mapping, well best see a few examples; probably not the best example, but never the less demostrates more or less: http://www.peerlessproductions.com/tuts.html (see camera mapping half way down)
and a pretty old one but still equally good: http://www.3dfluff.com/cameramapping/cameramappingtut.htm
Again check out the Dylan Cole website > reel for some nice examples. http://www.dylancolestudio.com/
And there's camera mapping DVDs at gnomon workshop.
Hope that helps a little.
Dave.

Just to add to what Dave said, the Gnomon camera projection dvds ( i think there might be a couple) really are worth it if you're interested in getting into that side of things, and they take you through the whole processs step by step.

Some games can use mattes as backdrops, specially adventures. Ive worked once as freelancer to such a game.
Other than that, cinematics tend to use them more and more, in team with 3D.
Dave pretty much nailed it down. I think Blur is the leader as far as cinematics are concerned....their animations are always something amazing to look at.
