Something like this would be the tale,
told centuries after the first Dolphins
where forced into becoming aware.

Since the initial idea revolves around
being driven out of Paradise into a
heat that burns like hell, most of
the sketches show protective, yet light cover (against the guilt?).

Thatīs about as far as I would want to
jump into psychological deep-dive here.

To be honest, I hope a lot of cloth will
give an appealing shape without forcing
me to show too much skin instead...

Iīm not sure if this would be the
correct lighting but I like the
mood and pose for the girl...currently.

I had first created just a squarish
snippet that would only cover the
area as seen in the layout but then
found that limiting for camera angles.

Ended up recreating a lowrez proxy and
extending it into a larger, cylindrical
base - using XSI (hint). Imported that
into ZBrush as a subtool of the original
snippet and painted the details back on
using the projection brush.

Went surprisingly well, I had expected
more hassle. The advantage is, I now can
do a 360° turntable and can stage the
final image (like in an a diorama) based
on the best silhouette.

As soon as I will actually have refinded
that silhouette...is still very rough.

Am now playing with the Painter X demo,
a bit overwhelmed with the phletora of
brushes and settings. All I would want
is a couple of good brushes with more
or less realistic behaviour.

Instead, tons of exaggeration in impasto
and the brushesī tip and wear, kind of
difficult to find good settings and
switch between two, three nice brushes.

Ah well, I had hoped for improvements
compared to the Painter Classic thing
that came with my wacom tablet.

Now, there I have it...thatīll take a
while longer...

Now since I had been so overwhelmed with
the Corel Painter X demo, I longed for
an alternative, ended up with ArtRage.

The variety of brushes and settings is
pretty good, easy enough to use.

Iīm not sure if it is me or Painter X,
yet Iīm glad I found a simple solution
that really doesnīt get in my way while
sketching. Painter probably has alot
more to offer, once one has grasped it
but for now, Iīm happy with ArtRage 2.

In terms of lookdev, this is pretty
much what I had in mind initially.

Thereīs still room for variation with
the "towel" around the head and the
jewelry, thought.

I had thought I could "just stick" three
cylinders together, paint some wrinkles
into them and be done with the clothing.

Well, no.

That wonīt do. So here I am, using all
sorts of reference to first create a
reasonable basemesh, then take that and
cover it with the various clothing and
jewelry pieces until itīs done...

Iīm about 25% through with the basemesh,
modeled in XSI, havenīt decided if there
will also be full head or just eyeballs.

Started modeling the dolphin, this is
loosely painted over a wireframe capture
since I started becoming headless...

Itīs not what I want but the generic
image that now needs to be turned into
something more unique. Thought about
making the brain bigger, ended up with
a Beluga whale, they do look cute, tho.

The idea now is to create a more ragged,
hurt animal, not disemboweled but close.

Somewhere along the original line of:

"taken out of itīs natural element"

This is the basic dolphin model, there
is a free one available via turbosquid
which I had a good look at to get an
idea about the proportions and volumes.

Ended up (re)building a less dense, quad
mesh myself, am currently using tons of
flickr links ("dolphin") for reference
of the facial area, teeth and tongue.

Since I started off a freely available
mesh, Iīll also make the new mesh freely
available as soon as the contestīs done.
Iīm not sure about those rules posting
things somewhere else or if thisīll
include such 3D model/ZBrush stuff...

Ideally will be able to give this thing
a decent Zbrush pass or at least try...

Hi there,

so this is the current layout, about
50% there in terms of POV and basic
lights. Might well end up with another
tint, some dust/spray would be great.

Now "all that is left" is detailing
and the characters, dunes, all that...

garrgh.

@i-c-m, glad you like the painting of the girl! Had been fiddling quite
a while with it. Still donīt like the proportions and the pose but
that probably fits the sceptic expression...

@kerem, checked your homepage. Damn, I always envy people that
can do big images, for whatever reason, mine tend to end up more
close-up. Never manage to show enough of a backround/story...

This is the first version of the
drab dress, missing the sleeves and
details. Iīm not too satisfied with
it but itīll probably be good enough
to put a cleaner topology on top, then
maybe even add some finer folds and such.

Well,

another wip of the human character,
basic proportions done now.

Iīm not sure if one will ever see her
face much so I better post her now.

Loads of details, folds and cleanups
missing, sleves not done yet. hands off.

Iīll leave her now for the dolphin...

Ah well,

suddenly got me a freelance job - on short notice.

Ended up landing in Beijing, China on Sunday 11th of May,
unpacked an stumbled right into that damn earthquake Monday 12th.

Even thought Beijing wasnīt hit much, I didnīt like that shake on
the 25th floor when the quake came in. It took quite a bit of time
to get out of there via the stairs and find a free spot in a park that
couldnīt be buried with crumbling skyscrapers (in case of aftershocks).

It took several days until we realized the dimension of the quakeīs
destruction, the deathtoll and tradgedies it brought, how lucky we
where nothing of that power had reached Beijing...
