Blocking in the first of two characters. The idea is one alien saving the life of another, carried from certain death to saftey.

Almost finished the base mesh for the second character. So the plan will be to get both characters modeled to a decent level, pose out/concept the final shot then go back in for refinement. So far the base meshes were made in max and I've done a few hours of sculpting on the big guy in zbrush. The final idea is for the big guy to be carrying the little guy off the battlefield, we'll see how it goes.

Just wondering, are there going to be no humans at all in this scene? The comp guidelines asked for some human interaction but I'm wondering if you were planning on heading in your own direction

Thanks Mark, as for the human element, the second character could indeed be a human in suit of some kind. I tend to work out the story as I go :).
Got some sculpting on the 2nd base mesh in this screengrab. Trying different poses with transpose. I think this one looks a bit like the big guy just killed him, maybe a tweak to the eyebrows could fix that. The joints/fingers/toes and pressure points will all be cleaned up once i settle on something. Also starting to think about the clothing (minimal) and jewelry for the big guy, I like jewelry :). Your critics are always welcomed!

Heres a shot of the little character in the big guys hands, he's still pretty rough. I want to have a nice contrast of a detailed crazy suit and a big half naked muscle alien.

Excellent work so far... I like very much the rough tenderness that this piece breathes. The wounded alien space suit design is very original, it reminds me of Inca or Azteca gods-that on the other hand some especulate with the posibility of them being aliens who visit the earth long time ago- and I think that might be a good design for it's helmet too. For the saviour, maybe his right hand touching his own chest, like interiorizing some affliction, the same way a gorilla would do? I wil try to add something to this character too that would add some contrast between its appeareance and behaviour, some spike-shaped knuckles and stuff like that? Altough it might be too cheesy, maybe... I don't know! Hope all this makes sense, though...Keep it up!

Hey raul, thanks a bunch for the comment, some great ideas in there. I think i'll definatly look at some Inca or Mayan masks for inspiration for his helmet. Also, I'll play with the posing of the big guy a bit more, maybe i can find something more dramatic or with a bit more feeling. Btw, I love the idea of ancient aliens on earth. Its a topic i've read alot about :). Thanks again for the nice words and everyone else who has commented!
I worked a bit on the big guys clothing today. Im going for a kilt type design with some pouches and stash spots. I'm still thinking about his jewelry, probably a couple necklaces, some percings and a bracer, we'll see. Updates as soon as i get this nasty sore throat cleared up.

Hi Ryan, I've been meaning to comment earlier. Sorry about that. The rendering of the work is nice. Maybe you would like to add a sense of gravity to the way the big alien is holding the smaller alien? When carrying a heavy object, the muscles will get tense, the biceps expanded from the lifting, the body will lean a bit to its left side because the centre of gravity has changed with the combined weight and form. Also try having the alien carry the victim on both of its palm, so that it can give a clear expression of being concern.
Another important thing to note is the role of human in this work. I suppose that the human is inside the victim's armor, but it is not obvious at all and could be other aliens too. Are you going to give the victim a proper human identity?

Wow, this image really creeps me out in a good way. When my brother was 3 he found a dead rabbit and carried it's limp body up to me in the same manner. Total flash back moment for me. The modelling and texturing look great. My only suggestion would be to tilt the head of the dead body further back.

dustbin1uk - hey dustin, thanks for the kind words. For this project I'm using Max to model all the base meshes, Zbrush to sculpt highpoly details and Maya for the final setup and rendering. I will explain more on my process when I have some time.
decosouza- thank you, actually there is a human in the scene :), if you look closely the hurt/dead/faking guy is actually a human in a suit. I agree though that this isn't as clear as it could be. I have an idea for my final image that may tie it together.

jeromoo- thanks for the critic man, I agree with pretty much everything you've said,my latest render here shows me I still have muscle form to develop on the big guy. The pose is a tricky one, I initially tried a 2 handed pose but found the human was far too small to fit that way, I could have scaled him up but I want their size different to be large.
I'm still tweaking it so I'll try to add more weight to the one I've settled on. His shoulder could also be tilted a bit more to show the weight of the human. The feet need more planting too. Thanks again for the words!

I've added a bunch more small details in this latest render. I went for a flat b/w render to see all my mistakes and areas that need improving one last time before I jump into texturing full steam. I finally had a vision for my final scene, I think there will be many humans hiding in places in the background watching this scene unfold. Is it a trap? bait? The humans are dressed for battle in suits that resemble the mortal enemies of the Baboon race (big guys). Baboon man finds this human in the suit laying in the path.
He knows the humans have allied with....THEM! More to come on that.

Exceptional modeling skills. I love your concept.I think the humans head could be hanging a little lower, and tilted back to make him a little more limp.As for the big guy, looking at his physical stature I think the human ways about 3lbs to him. To make a long story short, the distribution of weight looks fine.The pose simply shows his strength.Hurry up and finish so you can help me with mineLOL. Fantastic work.

One thing though - if the human is dead, his head should (by force of gravity and no muscle power to resist it) hang down since there doesn't seem to be anything upholding it. I'm glad you decided to show the face. Maybe the mouth should't be quite as wide open as it is?

I really like the flow of shapes and design in A. Both have good composition. But the style of A sells for a more interesting dynamic cool sketches and dope modeling.

Brad, Bryce, Thanks a bunch for the input guys. I went with A and started blocking in the 3d soon after. I felt B was just too Cliché with the moon and all. I'll have some fun modeling these alien trees too, I think they will be in a similar style and color to the human suit. So I've got a lot left to do If I want to finish this. I think its time to start detailing/texturing individual clothing pieces, then the trees, ground, rocks and anything thats left over.

Thanks for the words and suggestions guys! Most appreciated. So I've started working on the trees here. I'm also always playing with the color and framing in every wip shot, looking for something that fits. I tried adding a second human to the scene today, it worked out alright and I think I'll continue with it (update on that soon). As you can see the trees are similar to the human suits, they hide within this forest. I enjoyed the vertical composition but felt it lost focus on the characters so I'll be going with something a little more zoomed in.

This is coming along very nicely! Your really taking on board all the suggestions people are making, but more than that, your making this wonderful image your own.
The lighting is so much better and the feel of the scene is really coming out.
I think the standing human might do better if he was standing with one foot back in a kind of shocked pose, maybe with an arm raised.
Your composition is brilliant on this picture, my eye is drawn to the unconscious human, and when that badge on the alien is filled in, my eye will drift there without stopping too much.
I recommend a subtle pattern on the badge, nothing that takes your eye away from the dying/dead human or alien.
But seriously mate, your work is inspiring me to keep going with mine, even though I may not finish it on time.
Incredible design...the organic suit is a true piece of art!

Hi Ryan, I have been trying to figure a suitable scenario for the characters you have created. The humans are wearing some strange armour that looks like armoured mole, so they could be miners on some foreign planet. Suddenly one day their mine caved in. So what happens in your scene could be when the planet's native comes to their aid. That is what it initially looked like for me. What do you think, Ryan?
The humans' suits are really unique!

That logo on his belt is great! and I prefer the lighting now.
Though I think the cropping is too tight now, I preferred the open scene you had before, the composition was better and the eye was drawn better the the tragedy of the human in the aliens arms as the rocks behind seemed to frame the characters well.
jeromoo makes a really good point though, how about some equipment or bags, or utility items. It would give the creatures in the scene a reason for being there.
This is still one of my favourite peaces in the whole contest, well done!

I agree with you the last picture take off some interresting relationship between alien and human.
May be you could move camera a bit to the left and enlarge frame. it's not necessary to show the whole body of the human stand right side but a bit more could be better. So it's my 2cts of advices.

So it’s almost time to wrap this one up. Time for that massive render, hmmm hope it works :).
Some technical info. The whole scene is sitting at about 1 million polys in maya. I'd say over 10 million altogether in zbrush. I think 10 million polys to render in mental ray is a bit crazy so I'm using normal maps to transfer that detail to my (still very highpoly) render meshes. Ideally, I should use displacement mapping but was unable to figure out a good workflow fast enough and I'm a game artist after all. :) Normal maps are no stranger to me so I went with what I was comfortable using. All the main bodies have 2048 diff/spec/normal and most of the gear and background pieces are sporting 1024 diff/spec/normal. I think the biggest technical challenge will be rendering the very large final image, I may have to composite some of this together in the end.

The big guy's expression is really puzzling. For me, it looks like the face of a child that's just broken his favourite toy. It's great cause it makes the viewer think and get involved with the picture. Great job!

Woot! Ryan! I love it! It looks great! And you are still trying to improve it, which is admirable.
I love the logo and straps on the alien, they are detailed without being unsubtle.
Sigh, I wish I could finish mine in time for the deadline, but sadly bloody life gets in the way.
2 jobs to work and 5 websites to design, and I am stuffed for time. :argh:

One other idea, what about a smoking building off in the distance? Gives them a reason to be there and tells a little bit more of the story. Nothing elaborate, just a small bunker that could lead down to a mine or something.
You could put it somewhere to the top left horizon line. That way you could keep the frame of rock/tree you have there, and not have to move the characters or anything else in the scene.

It's looking amazing... The framing is really cool. As it is, this picture reminds me somehow those old Richard Corben illustrations. I'd only say that a bit more of free space over his head might improve the overall comp? Just a thought.
Storytelling wise, I agree something like a crash site in the background would make much sense, but since the other human is kind of welcoming the alien, it might be that he's found the carried in the middle of the desert too.

That looks very, very good! I love the stylized lighting which looks a bit light stage lighting in a theatre. Your models come out really good and the detail supports the whole composition.
I have one little thought about the pose of the alien. He holds the whole weight of the dead human but his feet stand close together. He looks a bit like he'll fall to the right. If it's still possible, you might place the alien's left food (right in the image) abit further outwards in order to support the weight of the human.
However, it's allready a really beautiful artwork!

Thanks so much everyone! I worked some more on the details of the hands and a few other parts. This is another zoomed in shot of the final image. The final came out at 1600x1860, I've been trying to get a larger one with my current render setup....crash crash. ah well i think its big enough, so I'll just be fiddling with a few more details then done.

Heres a couple screen grabs from the maya viewport of the finished models. And now I'll give a small explination of my technical process for this image.
1. I made all the base meshes in 3dmsax and used the regular poly modeling tools. Everything was fit together and lined up properly in max. For this piece, I laid down my final topology before I went into Zbrush to sculpt. I had all the edge loops in that helped me define my characters and parts when I was sculpting. Doing it this way I didn't need to re-top my mesh since the topology was already good. I think doing it this way gave me less freedom while sculpting and required more planning when constructing my base mesh. When the base meshes were done I put one smooth level on the objects and exported each piece as an obj (belt, rope1, rope2, body1, skirt etc). At this point I haven't unwrapped anything yet, I do that later, after sculpting.
2. I took these base mesh objs into Zbrush one at a time and sculpted details onto them and posed them if necessary. After I finished sculpting I used the poly painting tools in Zbrush to paint my diffuse and spec maps directly onto the meshes at a high sub-d level. Once that was done, depending on the part, I would either export the lowest sub-d level back to max for unwrapping or use Zbrushes AUV tiles feature to generate UVs.
3. I created all my normal maps inside Zbrush using Zmapper. I exported my meshes at level 2 sub-d, sometimes level 3 (for the main characters). I took all these objs from Zbrush and imported them into Maya where I applied my shaders with all the textures that were created in zbrush. The rendering for this one was in Maya with mental ray. There are 3 slightly colored lights in the scene, one main light, a rim light and a fill light.
Final image incoming....

Thank you all so much for the great ideas and help through out the challenge and cheers to everyone for making such an awsome batch of artwork. As usual I learned alot from watching everyones work progress, which is the best part of the challenges for me. It makes me want to do these more often :).

I can't take myself away to watch your piece. Especially cloth designs and details are so tasteful. I guess you have a huge profession about such as costumes and armor suits.

Congratulations Ryan!! You certainly have my best model/ best character vote at least!! The modeling and shading of your alien and of the human uniform is unreal!! Also the expression the alien has is very moving. He looks like a Shakspearean or ancient greek tragic hero. Really into the story. I wish you the best of luck here my friend.

Amazing work Ryan. :beer: Serious modelling and texture work. The only thing I could crit is the signature? Something handwritten would be much better than Times Roman. ;)

Congrats on an exceptional illustration Fetus23. I really love it! I really appreciate the vitality of the alien. There is so much life in a pose which could have been stale. You have poured so much emotion an life into him. LOVE the designs. Love the colors.
