Been coming to this site for a while and there’s some amazing work on here which has inspired me to start modelling in 3D we have Softimage at uni and so I decided to attempt my first human. No textures don’t even know how to do this yet. First model no head yet. Any criticism would be fantastic :D. We have only modelled TVs and tables and such at uni so far I wanted to be adventurous.

Hi!
well, i advice u, to first get a reference to begin the modelation!
try this link: www.finearts.sk
u get good anatomical references there.... then u can make a better human body ;)
keep trying.... with some studies u get some good results :D

Although what you did here isn't exactly bad for a first try, most people would not recommend modeling (realistic) humans to beginners. They aren't the "holy grail" of 3d for nothing, you know?

Why not learn the basics of organic modeling with something that doesn't have to look realistic; an alien, monster or even some exotic animal?
I'm still learning myself, and I think that objects that leave more artistic freedom can teach a great deal, mostly since they don't tend to frustrate you so much along the way! Most people can tell immediately when something's wrong with a 3d model of a human, simply because they are obviously very familiar with the shape and proportions - and so they tend to be a lot more critical of those models than of fantasy characters!

Just my advice...

Just read out the whole tutorial, you can find all the parts just like here (http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/joanmenu.asp)
It is very well described how to model body and clothes so that they fit exactly together and stuff, just the creation of a WHOLE highpoly character...

Ooh... Sorry about the wrong link hehe :P
U can start with human body, but u need to learn something about anatomy and edge loops.....
Just take a look in the fineart (without the "s" :-PPPPP lol) and some tuttorials (like the Joan Of Arc)... and keep trying.... don't give up! :D

Is max similar to softimage or the other 3d packages. We have both max and soft at uni but ive only used soft it seems like most the tutorials on all sites are for max. I could proberbly do learning both. For example it says to make certain edges invisible does that just mean remove them? as there seems no way of making them invisible in soft just deleting them.
Also the uni used to run softimage xsi 2.01 when u seleted a group of points and then another set it deslected the old set and left the new one selcted. In xsi 3.0 when you select points then select some more the preivous stay unselected this is realy frustrating heh and i have no idea how to turn this off.
Thanks for your time sorry if i sound like a nagging newbie or something gotta start somewhere

Luke
