I've included a silly photoshop mockup of a lighting style im trying to make. Through lighting only (not shading) i want to make the falloff of the light stepped as seen in the example i made. I want to be able to create 3 or 4 distict areas of brightness the further away on a object is from the light source. Also i would like this to be possible to apply seperately to each object in the scene isntead of one light affecting all objects (light linking?)

anywhoo, i've tried putting a ramp into the decay falloff, but that didnt seem to do anything useful. anyone know how i can achieve this look?

Thanks

Did you try playing around with the fall-off and using area lights?

If you want it per-object, consider whether you really want the gradations to appear in the shader. Sounds like you're using Maya, a Maya "Ramp Shader" as the shader type includes a gradient you can edit, set interpolation type on, etc. to remap the brightnesses into steps.

If you really want it from the light, Maya Volume Lights include a gradient for their brightness and color from center to edge (you need to scale the volume light large enough to include the subject it's lighting), and Maya Spotlights can use custom falloff curves, so a curve like an animation curve controls the brightness at different distances, it can be a stepped curve.

i don't know if i understood your question, but
what about spotlight decay regions?
