Well, I finally finished my income tax so now I can devote time to this contest. I originally had an idea to do a picture of people (human and alien) struggling across a rocky landscape. The composition I had in mind would have been fairly good, but I couldn't get energized about the idea, having recently lost my beloved pet. But my relationship with her led me to a different idea...

It makes sense, given the age of the universe, that if we move out into the galaxy, we would almost always encounter races vastly more advanced than we are. They would be smarter, wiser and stronger. At least as far above us as we are above cats and dogs. What if one of the races felt compassion toward the little human animals venturing out among the stars? Humans could become pets to them. Not in the creepy dictatorial, domineering way, but instead in the way of a guardian and caretaker of a beloved friend.

Here are some rough pencil sketches I did of the two main characters.

Here is a collection of three 3D previz images to help me get a feel for the way the two characters work together.

In this story, they've been together since they were both very young. She (the pet) had a full life, both with him (the guardian) and apart from him--though he worried and kept a stealthy watch over her whenever she went on one of her crazy adventures. She had a husband, child, grandchildren, etc. But her lifespan is so much shorter than his and he watches in bitter grief as his beloved pet grows elderly and more and more tired. Though she can't run and play with him the way they used to, he still takes her for walks in the warm sunlight.

I'm thinking of using the middle image, but expanding it on the right side to show more landscape and a great-grandchild running next to another type of alien.

Here is the model of the elderly woman.

One of three 3D previzes...still trying to nail down a composition. This version has an advantage in that the elderly woman's face is seen more directly as she looks up at her guardian.

Second of three 3D previzes. This one I like because of the visual flow and rhythm. But the lady's face is turned mostly away from the camera.

Last of three 3D previses. Trying out different leg positions for the alien guardian, but I don't care for the way it spoils the visual rhythm compared to the previous image.

Hey Nick, nice concept. I like your idea :). The last composition is nice, the pose for the woman works well. Maybe the camera needs to stay a bit down, to a more forced down to up take. Try a more wider lens. Perhaps a more forced perspective with a wider lent can put a more dramatic touch on your image, only a comment :) . Good luck !! Cheers mate!!

Thanks Ferx. I'll give that perspective a try (that's the great thing about 3D is it's so easy to change things).

Based on Ferx's suggestion, here is a closer, wider angle view of the scene. I also made the alien a little bigger to compensate for the reducing effect of the wide angle. I like this one. Might play around with different leg positions.

Here is work I've done on her face. The ears are not detailed because they will be mostly or completely covered by hair.

The poor dear still has no hair. I'll have to work on that next. Trying to create a fuzzy wooly look to her coat.

Hi there Nick. I'm very sorry to hear about your pet, I know how devastating it is to loose one. I like your concept very much and having an old lady as the human character gives something sweet to the image. My advice would be pretty similar to that of Ferx, move the camera much closer to the characters and place it almost at ground level, facing up. It's a very dramatic angle, but I think it will enhance the idea of the big alien being protective of the human, cause she will look smaller than the alien and it will reinforce her pose (looking up).

Good luck and have fun.

Thank you Gerardo. I'm bouncing back and forth between working on the overall composition and working on the models, hoping I'll find some compositional epiphany. I'll try making the viewing angle lower, but I have to be careful. I don't want the angle to be so extreme that it detracts from the simple mood I'm trying to convey. Also, if the camera angle is too low, the lady's expression won't show up well, and that is very important to the story being told because everything else in the picture is unfamiliar.

This is the upper body of the alien. I should be able to move faster now. The alien will be a lot easier to do than the human.

Thanks Trey. The woman was difficult to model (I'm still not happy with the way she looks) but the alien will be fun to work on.

Here are some color attempts for the alien. This is much harder for me to do than modeling because I tend to imagine in form rather than color.

I finally worked on the alien's arms. I didn't want to go for the typical tentacle look which I had put on my initial sketch. I also wanted the arms to have hands with which I hope to show some expressiveness in the final picture.

Excellent, It draw my attention among all others in contest because this is maybe only true alienesque creature seen here. All other are mostly game/hollywood influenced insect/animal like creations:) This does hovever resemble somewhat to [url="http://www.waynebarlowe.com/expedition_pages/exped_sea_strider.htm"]Barlowes artworks (http://assets.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/20/15322/15322_1210306803_large.jpg)for Discovery Alien planet, but it is on his own right path:) Wish You sucess!

(Here is the final version. There are a number of things I would have liked to change in it, but I ran out of time.)

Thanks for the compliments. I enjoyed designing and building the alien. Unfortunately, I had too little time left to do the overall environment properly, so I may return to this scene later (after I've rested up from the effort) and do things right.
