View Full Version : Animating display tag: visibilty

Hiya,

I'm trying to animate the visibilty parameter in the display tag.

I've created the 'Tag: Display' object and 'Use Visibilty' track in the timeline, but when I select the visibilty parameter in the AM and add a KF, the result appears to be global for the whole timeline, with no apparent record of the value. What am I missing here?

Many thanks.

Do you want your object to dissapear over time? You would then need to add a KF with the valuue set to 100, and then next keyframe set value to 0. The editor will either show the object visible or invisible, but if you render it out you will see the fade occur.

That's exactly what I wanted to do, but I wasn't getting any apparent feedback, from either the AM, KFs or the viewport...I guess I'll hit render and see what happens...

PITA for having to render it just to check something so simple... :/

Will see what happens...

Cheers,

Its not a big deal really--just go to a frame in the middle of the fade and render the frame in the editor.

But for some reason here, it's not working. I gather I've missed something. Heck! What is there to miss...?

My point about it being a pain, was the fact there seems to be no way of checking the event data other than rendering...slightly surprising. It's all very well rendering a single frame, but if you're doing anything other than a linear fade, you've gotta render the whole seq...

Is there a way of viewing/editing existing visibilty KFs?

Thnaks for your help here! :)

Instead of keyframing, 'Use Visibility,' use the 'Visibility' parameter track. 'Use Visibility' is basically an On / Off switch where the 'Visibility' track will allow you to fade objects in and out.

ARRRGGGHHH!!!

This is what I meant to use! I wanted a controlled fade, but couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting anything more than a simple switch. I didn't notice that there were actaully two entries (Use visibilty AND Visibility) in the track popup. How confusing is that...?

After looking at the manual and still not sussing it, I'm a little annoyed at how confusing that was...a little clarification in the manual would be def be good there.

Maybe it's just me...

Either way: Many, many thanks for your help Chris. Stupid GUI problem solved...I can now move on... :)

Cheers,

Oh yeah I made the same mistake about a week ago--I should have clarified that the use visibility track is the wrong one to use in my last post.

Sorry!

mmm i need a little hint about this since it' really what i'm looking for to make objects fade in/out from my scene.

if i go in timeline/file/new track/parameter/

i can only see:
visible in editor
visible in rendering

i cannot se the two entries (Use visibilty AND Visibility)u referred to.

Pls i need this hint really soon. Thx in advance to anybody

You can just right click the object in the timeline window and select: New track> special effects> visibility.

Than just create key frames by controll clicking the track and put in the % you want the object to be visible...

Hope that's what you meant...

It no longer works like that in R8, Kiri.

You need to add a display tag to your object. Then select it.In the Attributes Manager, check visibility.

Go to the timeline and under time tracks-parameters, you will see the visibility parameter (dont select the "use visibility" option) and make your keyframes.

yeah in R7 it was so much easyier

in R8 its a real bitch to do this

Its a bitch the first time--was definitely for me--but once you know what to do its not bad--though its 3 extra steps to do it in R8.

Weird stuff... :hmm:

Is there any added functionality with this change, or are they secretly spending their money on crack...? :surprised

This is the area in R8 that I think has gotten too complex--as far as just trying to get your job done. Basically there are many more levels of control you have in R8 as far as keyframing parameters, but, unfortunately you also are given dozens of parameters to wade through in most cases. Also, in R8, where they have broken the transformation tracks into their XY and Z components, I find to be confusing--though it can also be helpful/neccasary--(and more higher level) in many cases. I feel like I'm learning C4d all over again in terms of the animation functionality.

Can't say that its a bad thing overall--just bad in terms of productivity---kinda annoying. I was used to going "boom boom boom" and it was done. Now its "boom....boom boom (consult manual) boom boom (post thread) boom.....done.

>>> Joel

your tips where not so precise.

to enable the Visibility:
after checking the use visibility in the TAG properties of the AM, right click on the VISIBILITY word and from there u can do keyframing.

In your description u missed to say that first u have to isert the Dispaly tag in time line.

I think this should be said because this for used user may be obvious but for newcoming users like me can be a pain in the ass.
In fact following your infos i was frustrted by the fact that i was seening the visibility parametr but even choosing it no result come.

anyway thx for the help, it was just an OXYGEN breath to me

Sorry--I missed that step! You are correct--forgot about that.

I discovered that step after posting at postforum about this. Did it once since then--and I guess I have a very short term memory for details. I couldnt find anything in the manual concerning animating visibility keyframes. I agree--it should be made more clear.
