Hi people!

I'm new to matte painting (not to photoshop and painting) and when I first saw this challenge I thought I could take one of the pictures and try some stuff while learning from the entries and comments from others (and some other tuts on the net ;)... so I went for it but didn't bother posting any concept because I was just planning to work on 1 piece. After many hours this last weekend and some during the previous weeks I came up with this:

http://blog.phi2.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/matelast.jpg

Then I imported the stuff to after effects and came up with this other:

Xvid Comp (2Mb) (http://phi2.net/ftp_phi2/videos/matte_challenge_01_final.avi)

Because I never posted the 3 concepts and probably would not even have time to finish two more mattes this is not an official entry to the Unofficial Matte Painting Challenge, instead is just an other post so that you can see my stuff and comment on it, be as bold as you like, I'm here to learn so I'll take all comments on board :) I can start by myself: most buildings look like shit! far from photorealistic (tried to paint in a lot and keep the photography footage low.. that kind of defeats a bit the concept of matte painting but anyway... , next time)!! Ok, who's next?

That matte looks pretty good on the video you posted.

I think integration, camera tracking and exposure is quite good, you did a good job here, I like the concept as well, I just think that the dome looks too flat, it doesn't look spheric you know? it's too plane, flat, with no depth ,round shape and perspective in its lines, good job to be your first one, kee it up !

Spherize filter on the dome will lift it, dont forget to replace shadow and bounce light.

Thanks a lot to you all for the comments, valuable and encouraging stuff for me :) Thanks!
Going to technical matters: I see that probably the dome is the weekest point and I agree with your comments. My intention was to paint a kind of giant sortoflike solarpanel looking dome with an eliptic shape, so a flat inclined surface (ramp) facing the kind of bridge in the center of the image... (trying hard to explain my self here)... something like a melon slice on teh floor :D , that was my intention anyway. So i think that the stuff maiking it look a bit flat is probably the prespective of the white scafolding lines wraping the thing (there is non... using the line tool in photoshop could be the reason jeje), they are probably too straight when they could be skewed int the distance, also the atmospheric ambient light, as the ramp goes up and away should probably create a gradient.. i did that but maybe after many layers i reduced its effect to nearly nothing, ie flat. So! that is my diagnostic, any other ideas? I'll try and work on that if i find some time (bit busy this days looking for place to live) .. or maybe starting a new one will do better to me... Anyway thanks for standing trhough my rant ;)
