...first C4D model.... loving every minute of poly-based modeling!!!!
There's probably a better method for doing heads... but so far I'm loving the level of control.

(very much a WIP... just wanted to be able to model something in C4D other than a sphere!)

hmm got real potential love the way the textures are going.

can you post a wire for us?

not bad.

JIII - not much to look at yet, but thanks!
the textures are just a skin texture slapped on... same with the eye (I didn't even have the decency to multiply it unto the white)...

and, OH NO>>> YOU WANT THE WIRES... OF MY FIRST POLYGON MODEL????:scream: :scream: :scream: :scream: :scream:

oops... I'll post them as soon as I get home... but please, be gentle. I just discovered today that there are such things as edge tools!!!!

Think of it as a learning expericnce, yeah I would not want any of my first wires avalible. however if they had been i would be a much more advanced user than I am now.

Hi Rev.

Is this a human or alien head. If human than I would
say the eyes are to apart. If alien then its a great
start for the the form is very stylish. Go on and post
your progress. It will motivating you.

Eyes should be one eye width apart. That is just a gereral rule. Unless its an alien of course.

grstovell
05-12-2003, 08:10 PM
It's really supposed to be human...
I'll check the eye separation when I go home. I thought they were an eye apart... it may be gap in the mirror that makes it look further apart...

and yes... I'll post the progress and the wires when i get home...

ps- WHAT A NICE FORUM! friendliest I've been on so far! cool!:bounce:

ok..
fire away! And be merciless!!! (I'm starting again anyway... found a better way to do this... Just discovered what extrude edge actually means!)

-g

JIII

not bad but the mouth and nose area are gonna be hard to fix.

one way to make a good nose is to extrude twice from the flat polys and then play with the points until it looks nose like.

the way you are messing around with the nose and mouth area is gonna make it impossible to make a mouth.

grstovell
05-13-2003, 04:23 AM
JIII- you're absolutely right about the nose/mouth. I did try to fix it, but it only got worse and worse... plus the eyelid was going to be REALLY hard to animate.

so I started again... from a single poly, I am copying points, moving, bridgeing, copying, moving, bridgeing...etc...
is there a better way to do this? Is there a way to simply select an edge and clone-move it?

That's looking a million times better, you're getting some topology (sp?) in there now.

You can extrude edges, this is usually prefered to copying points.

I click extrude then hold alt and then click on the view, then I move the newly created edge to where I want it.

You can extrude, hold alt and click+drag the mouse to move the created edge but it usually doesn't move in the direction you want it to, which is why I prefere the example above. :)

yeah man that is way way better.

Nice (re)start. Before you get too far along, you might want to spend a day reading this thread:

Topology Research Thread in the modeling forum (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38469)

...that helped me a lot. Also, don't be shy about re-starting it several times... you'll learn more from every attempt.

oof!

13 pages!!!!!
cool link.
So, don't expect another update until after Thursday... too much reading! Too many wires to look at!

Thanks!

something weird about this... It's supposed to be male, but looks kinda female... not sure why.

Also.. I think I'm kinda scared of tackling the nose. do you reccomend I add the flat nose polys, extrude and model, or add polys one by one to form the nose shell... (does that make sense?)

anyway... fire away.
-g

JIII
05-14-2003, 07:26 PM
okay it looks female for a few reasons.

1 the forehead is to low. Men tend to have foreheads that protrude farther.

2. the cheek bones are to high and sharp. Men have lower and broader cheek bones.

3. the face is very slim and skinny, men have slightly wider faces.

hope this helps.

ohh and modeling is pretty simple after you know what you are doing so putting the nose off in the long run will probibly hurt you.

I am wishing that I didn't put off modeling a torso for so long now I am doing my first torso and man is it hard.

Don't put it off.

grstovell
05-14-2003, 07:42 PM
don't put off the nose?

no problem!:p

(I'll get to it tonight - she may get some sort of sex change tonight also!)

thanks!

lol that nose is great.

LOL, love that last picture

grstovell
05-14-2003, 08:30 PM
You're right... eyes are a bit too long.
she'll get an eye-reduction tonight also.

Sorry to dissapoint you with the new nose-job.
(I know about the bridge... needs work. too many tris)
Here's the latest installment.
What do you think? fixable? Or re-start over?
(if fixable... how can I add detail to the nose without generating tris?)

-g

JIII
05-14-2003, 09:21 PM
thats a good nose there.

the nose bridge needs a bit of work looks a bit to square but if you think you can make do with it use it.

the nostrals are a bit funky though. you are gonna need more shape in them.

Hi Rev.

I see you fight with modeling noses. So I thought
I make some wire-renderings from noses I have
created. Hope this helps a bit.

Watching your progress - keep on

aaaarghrghghrhrghghaghrghagrhargahrg!!!!:thumbsdow :hmm:
7 noses later and this is what I come up with????
Time to put this model aside and model only noses for a little while...

in the meantime... and just for the learning experience... can someone crit. this model? Be brutal... 'cause you may never see her again:surprised

here is a VERY basic nose mesh.

the ones posted earlier are too dnese to easily replicated. so here is one consisting of almost no polys.

side unsmoothed front unsmoothed and what it looks like smoothed.

grstovell

Thanks for the nose (that sounds weird, doesn't it?)

I had a few basic noses like that, but always got a weird looking 'bump' rather than a 'nostril encasing' (whatever you call the 'nose wings' on the side of the nose... you know what i mean).

so my question is... in your wire, is it safe to assume that you just created the nose polys and then just extruded the sides? Is what I drew in the picture accurate?

ahh the magic nasal flaps strike again if you look closely you will notice something that there are tris that make the nasal flap thingys.

this is a trick I picked up from bunk timmers excellent head/body tutorial over at maxon.net.

basicly what you do is choose a place where you want the nostral to be then use the add points tool to add two points.

this will make some ugly tri's so what you do is delete all the polys that got trienized(not a work I know). then you bridge them together leaving a tri on the top and bottom.

simply grab the new edge out pull it out. instant nostrals.

man!

way too easy! cool. thanks!

Back to the old head.

yeah I was really really impressed with thsi technique when I first ran into it.

three cheers to bunk or who ever devloped it.

here's a new head, with a better topology (I think)
she still needs to have the skull fixed, but at least all the polys are there... and only 2 tris so far!!!!

Looks good, a few crits. The top of the head has a protruding bone or something in it that seems out of place. Also, the lips need to be straightened out in the inside. Perhaps bring the brow down some, it seems to be a little far up. Other than that I think that you did an excellent job. The eyes look great

the nose seems sorta squished and too sharp. Also, i feel as if there isnt enough forehead. But it is such a big improvement mate, you should be proud :D

JIII

smooth the forehead a bit make it more rounded.

and then fatten the nost a little bit. if you do that it will be pretty nice.

Hey lookin nice Reverend,
I think your doing a great job for being new... It looks a bit like a little girl instead of an older person, if that’s what your trying to model your doing a good job. But If you want to make here look more adult I think it would be beneficial to up the size of the chin in proportion to the top of the head. And I think you might want to puff out the nostrils a bit, :) I cant think of the right way to say that. I think you know what I mean; other than that you have a great model for being so new to c4d. Oh and from our other conversation a while ago, its pretty cool that you’re a Reverend, I just didn’t expect it would be anything more than an alias. Or that a Reverend would have any interest in 3d, Lol :) yeah please excuse the horrible stereotype. Don’t want to piss you of, you having that whole wrath of God thing on your side :p. Well just keep up the good work and Im sure this model will turn out great...

Thanks guys!

I decided to bury this model since it was done without references. Never had the intention of doing anything in particular (it was supposed to be a guy when it started out!!!!) - but I'm happy.

I just started a new face with references this time. Check it out in the new thread (character: new noob head 2).

And yes... I am a Rev. - and I have to turn this computer off so I can finishe preparing for tomorrow... it's Saturday night, and not everything is ready!!!!! See, I tell you... 3D is evil:thumbsup: anyway.. off to work!
