Hi there,

I decided to put up some lame resistance for our new car-god, dear ThirdEye (not that I thought I could really beat him, just to make an effort :D ). Anyway, been lurking and reading all the numerous hints on the topic, and finally have gotten some clue on how a car should be modelled in Cinema. So - Here we go...

It's quite good so far, nice mesh. A couple suggestions:

1) don't shade the car with that horrible brilliant green, it doesn't allow me (and you) to understand if there are bumps, creases or seams in the mesh.

2) try assigning a reflective material to the car and make it reflect some geometry, maybe a bright plane over the car, that way you can understand if your mesh is really flowing or not.

Good work :wavey:

Heh - okay, I'll dump the Kawasaki Lime green:p

I guess I'm a bit over-enthusiastic with the color since I just got my new Kawa ZX-6R...But I'll give an update soon with some reflections!

At this stage the shading's not important at all, the only important thing's the mesh. You can shade it with lame... err lime green later :D

Congrats for your ZX-6R, nice bike for sure

It's not going to be lime green when finished....;) But the ZX6R is a timemachine!!

Btw, ThirdEye - you once mentioned you use the makethicker, care to share what angle & offset you use and how many steps usually? I've been playing with 180° and 1, applied once but was wondering what's the best looking? (guess I'll just have to keep experimenting with diff values:shrug: )

hey peoples!

that car is coming along nicely! i would agree with you that the sections need to be a bit thicker though.

You said "Anyway, been lurking and reading all the numerous hints on the topic..."

hate to ask the obvious, but... what hints? Did third-eye write a tut? is there a 'good-car-wip-thread' around here?
(i know... sounds naive, but i'm new to the fourm:) )

I usually use 180° and 1 too, but sometimes some pieces don't need makethicker at all

Well, the car modeling subject has really been a "hot" topic here every now and then, and since ThirdEye decided to show to the world that cinema is as good as any other app when producing stunning cars, many of us have started to model cars. If you run a search in this forum, you'll find many threads on cars - try this f.ex:

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41676

Start with blueprints, some points, copy-paste points and bridge. Read the search results - it's all in these threads that you need to make a car! Believe me! If I can do it so can you, the biggest problem is giving up, you got to be persistent and if some part doesn't look good - start over!

Update - haven't run the MakeThicker yet on this one - the material is just for some reflections. The windows are a pain in the ASS to model..

The windows are the simplest thing imo... just split the perimetral points of each piece surrounding each window and bridge them

Peoples
05-13-2003, 03:27 PM
yeah - but i have different amount of edge points in the pieces - so I end up with ugly tri's...and if I need some curvature in the windows I need more pointrows in the middle of the window as well... so I can't get the windows line up nice with the body... :bounce:

Excellent, looking good, and a nice motor, too. I fear I'm going to have to restart my car WIP... :wip:

Got bored with modeling, took a break and rendered a quickie with uzifi......Still lots of work to do, and once I get the modeling finished it's time for some material baking and I think I'll model some simple environment to put it in as well:buttrock:

Nice car, clean mesh.

I started this car yesterday, I guess I'm going to start another one.

As the details get smaller - it also gets harder:bounce: :bounce: But thats what makes the difference......

update on the front - have to tweak the lights and model the bulbs too..

One with a sphere for some reflections - I will render it with hdri for the final renders - this is just a wip shot. Mirrors....doorhandles.....foglights.....etc....:thumbsdow  ??

looking really good  did you do the headlights this way - copied the points around where the lights would go and then from those points made the lights ? also, what material did you use for the glass look of the headlights ?

Peoples
05-19-2003, 04:38 PM
Yup - that's how I "baked" them. Just copy-paste points and bridge, as usual. The glass material is very simple: spec, color, refl and transp. channels activated, reflection w/ fresnel, high and narrow specular, darkgrey color and 50% transparency:shrug:

thanks! can i also see the front of the car with lights in wireframe?

Can't keep myself from doing some testrenders even though it's not even close to beeing finished...I think I'll have to try the iron plug - the reflections on the windshield and roof aren't quite as they should be - smooth and linear. But overall I'm beginning to be pretty satisfied with the result. But - as I said, still have to do a lot of things.

What do you suggest? or :thumbsdow ?

It's coming - slowly...

This "greenroom" concept is from the gallery car thread - someone had made a similar one with a Mazda. I thought it looked cool for a test so here we go:

http://www.hut.fi/u/vhautala/renders/62h.jpg

The second one is the untouched version..

Howdy!

I need a kick in the ass to get this one finished.. Still lacking mirrors, fog lights, vipers, doorhandles etc.......Well - I just wanted to test some flames:drumrock: :argh: :insane: :arteest:

The reflections look a bit weird cos I haven't got any application to convert the hdri's to get the mapping correct....

Here we go:
