View Full Version : I've been playing with HDR images

I used some HDR images for the first time. I think I'm getting the hang of it, but I'm still discovering some isue's with HDR.

Is it advisable to use HDR images for the lightning in combination with a spotlight?

Here are some try-outs with HDR images in the reflection and the global illumination.

I like that top one a lot...excellent. Not so keen on the second one as your logo seems to be the focus of attention. I would like to know what package you use, it sound like Lightwave. I use lightwave but have never managed to get anything as realistic as the top picture. How did you do it??

Don't mind the logo, that's just to prevent people from stealing the image.

I've rendered the scene in 3DS MAX 5 with the Brazil plug-in. just basic raytrace-materials. And a HDR map for the skylight (GI) and reflections.

To get realism you have to tweak with the lighting, materials and shadows till it looks right. There are no basic settings, every scene needs tweaking and testing before it looks okay.

wow that first one looks pretty impressive

could you describe (more precise) how you did that with the hdri?
i would really like to know that stuff :)

alvast bedankt ;)

Could you post the first one without HDRI?? Very nice model. Too clean though. Thumbs up!

Hey thatīs good stuf, Iīve been plaing with HDRI myself but i donīt have brazil, so i wuould like to ask you a couple of questions.
As i said before i donīt have brazil so i have to put the hrdi map in the sky light, and render with light tracer, but man, itīs so expensive in render time i think i canīt use it again, a frame that ordinary took me 5 mins to render, with hdri took me 20 hours!!!!
Can it be right, or is it something i am doing wrong?

Does brazil takes to much time? could you try the way i said just to chek the time?

Thanx

i like them BUT CMON you can take the logo right off the center, i see the logo before anything, and if they steal them oh well they like them that much. remember that the greatest artist are online and dont have a huge logo across the front, this is your art not maya personal learning edition.

anyways looks good:beer:

HDRI is realy simple to use. All you need is a program that can use it. HDR images are just images that have an extra channel for the amount of light they emit.

1. Brazil can be fast if you know how to use it. Use small maps for skylight (100 x 50 pixels is enough) . Use default settings.

2. I'm not going to render it again without HDRI, but I can tell you that the HDRI only affects the reflections (much more contrast in dark and light) and the skylight (uneven lighting and lightningcolor).

3. Use good materials! Here are some tips:

- Use a raytrace texture for reflecting materials
- Use a fallof map (perpendicular to camera, no fresnel) for the reflection
3. Add an enviroment (a HDR image can be used for more effect)
4. Turn of the glossiness and specular, you don't need that when you are raytracing in combination with a enviromentmap.
5. Global Illumination (as skylight) gives it a really nice 3D look, but it has some isue's (conserning reflections that become complete dark).
4. I know shit about texturemapping so hence the superclean robot.

Fallof maps for the reflection really make your textures work!

ah well, allright then.....

* logo's hav been removed *

pics are originaly rendered at 3000 x 2000 pixels, really looks nice when printed with professional photoprinter on a 25 x 38 photo for only 3 euro's.

Heb je de HDRI-map zelf gemaakt of ergens vandaan (zo ja, waarvandaan?:))

Erg cool, met name die eerste.

Did you make the HDRI-map yourself or did you get it from somewhere (if yes, where from?:))

Very cool, esp. the first one.

Yep, vette hap!

Have you unwrapped the robot? Adding a bit of grime and possible bump would be really nice, but even without that: Cool!

Does anyone know a tutorial how to unwrap or an easy to use program ? All I want is to unwrap a texture. Edit the texture in photoshop and wrap it back on the model.

PS
Die HDRI heb ik ergens van internet gehaald. Geen idee waar vandaan. Gewoon ff zoeken.
