You set the resolution for the hardware render buffer in the attributes window.
You can also select "edit\hardware render globals" in the render globals window.

will it be in maya 5
Ohh wait, uhh, nevermind, lol please excuse me, I'm just sooo tired righ now I can't think :p
you can type in ur custom res
Resolution
The resolution of hardware rendered image files. Click the Select button to select a preset image resolution, or type a custom image resolution in the Resolution field using the following format:
<formatName> <width> <height> <deviceAspectRatio>
For example, type:
JohnFormat 400 200 2
When you change the Resolution, the Hardware Render Buffer changes to that size. The default setting is:
ntsc_4d 646 485 1.33
(see docs or http://caad.arch.ethz.ch/info/maya/manual/UserGuide/Rendering/RenderingReference/AttributeEditorHardwareRender.fm1.html)
hehe I was thinking about the proper hardware renderer in Maya5, not just the one for hardware particles in previous versions ;)
So, try putting in:
myformat 7000 5000 1.4

i tiped in 7087 5906 but hardwEARE RENDERER made picture size 709 591 pixels
Okay... I got it (hehe I've never actually used the hardware renderer before.. hmmm, it seems that it's not just for particles! :p :p)
Anywayz, just do this:
Set your resolution.
and set Start Frame :1, End Frame: 1
In render modes, you must tick: FULL IMAGE RESOLUTION
and then Render Sequence in the HW renderer window
It should make the image in your images folder, and you can open with FCheck.
