this is the concept for one of the characters that will remain silent and motionless but his presence should have and important role in making a grim atmosphere :)

an alien concept..it should resemble a dolphin a little, im trying to make some connections to Uplift books although i havent read any, i think the dolphin aliens are mentioned as more evolved and willing to help :) so i would like to have one here as a good guy, humans are bad and corrupted by another alien race that will remain undercover..as it really is :D

That's a piece of fine art in here!!
Which book is your movie based on?
Cheers!!

SittingDucky
04-11-2008, 09:53 PM
hi, tnx! its not really based on any book..i used to read some extreme conspiracy stuff : ) so i guess it influenced me a little for basic plot..and im still not sure what is it about, but im sure about the characters so im doing them first.

I like the dolphin alien a lot.
Good design. I like the flow of the muscles.

Another bad human...the concept for it was rather poor so i modeled most of the stuff on the fly. armor plates are detachable so i will try to make a few variations for animation, including some color change. normal and cavity maps are complete. i will do some photoshop detailing later. stains and specular masks...+ adding some insignia...
it kinda looks weird to me, but i think he does look evil..so let me know what u think. tnx

Very cool.

Personally not sure about the color choice....but the model is friggin scary (as in like, dark and ominous)

Congratulations.

SittingDucky
04-13-2008, 06:33 PM
thanks! yeah the colors will be changed later for sure..i wanted to avoid the typical red+white+black=evil combination but i guess i did it subconsciously : )) there should be a bit of royal feel to it so i decided to go with the more purple instead of red..but i think it will all go black and grey

refined textures. i guess its 90% done..few more tweaks here and there..but i will leave it be for now and start rigging it or model other characters. critique welcome, cheers

Very nice modeling and texturing. Also amazing concepts.
Only thing i can think of are the eyes. Maybe if you wanna make him really look like a bad guy you could try out red eyes instead of blue.

looking forward for more ;-)

SittingDucky
04-14-2008, 09:51 AM
Hi, yeah the red eyes are evil for sure..im trying to avoid using red for evil in general..maybe i will do a squad of those guardians protecting the black pope, leader could have more red or black paint on armor...they are supposed to torture that alien later on, i want them to appear somewhat regal and fancy until they start doing the bad things :)

Then maybe you can instead of the red eyes use a logo like from some evil empire. Like an organization. This logo might make the costume more a uniform and add that little arrogance.

curious to see next

SittingDucky
04-14-2008, 11:04 AM
tnx guys! i have the logo..its similar to that shape on top of the staff that pope is holding...it was on the chest armor first but i removed it becouse it looked like a bad case of mapping : ))) i'll put it again but maybe across both chest plates..its all just fine tuning now..tnx for crits!

a small update while im doing the not so exciting rigging stuff. added small bump textures on top of normal maps to increase detail on metal and clothes. also trying a bit different coloring scheme..
im very happy with render time, it never goes above one minute, i think this pic took about 20 secs in good old scanline..there will be a mray occlusion pass later..i guess that one will take about 5 mins max..

Fetus23
04-16-2008, 04:07 PM
This is looking fantastic Brajan! The materials you've got going on in there are very convincing. My only crit right now would be i liked the render with the velvet type material for ther under purple garment, Right now it has a slight bit of bump on it which is the same bump on the straps. Could be cool to go back to that soft backlit velvet look just for that.
Keep at it man, can wait to see the dolphin!

And the rendertimes for MR - even more impressive :)

I like the design.

SittingDucky
04-16-2008, 08:23 PM
tnx guys! the render is from max scanline..thats why its so quick..just shadow maps and no fancy lighting : )) i didnt try mray yet but i hope it wont take longer than 5 mins.. it depends on whats in the scene anyway..i just hope i will have enough resources to keep rendering the main pass in scanline : ))

velvet material is a good idea..i had that velvety look when no textures were applied but now i think i like this bumpy one better, i think i will just remove the bump from that strap on elbow..
tnx for comments!

04-17-2008, 11:51 PM
Looking very good. Try finalRender for rendering... it's faster and it gives very nice results. Once you have your full scene set up, the scanline can be a pain in the ass. Specially when you're dealing with lots of raytrace. Good luck!

the rig is finally complete, it was a very hard character to setup. lots of cloth layers and armor..im not much of a rigger so i added a lot of small controls to help me manually tweak the overlapping areas, especially around the shoulders. i've also posted a small turntable quicktime here: http://www.box.net/shared/rldpvpag48

i see others contestants post their vids, i hope im not violating any rules by that, if so, pls let me know and i will unshare it.

here's a little modeling update on the black pope. getting the concept right and trying to further articulate the character. i reused the guardian rig so that part is 90% done, gotta hurry so i'll take a lot of shortcuts like that :)

hahaha (or, jajaja in spanish : )) i have to admit that i got too much of it still in modeling phase, + environment is still just a vague image in my head. the dolphin is modeled, just the texture work and some tweaking left..i will try to reuse the guardian rig again. then finally doing the animation. well, if i dont make it i can always do it for portfolio ;) but this challenge is just real fun to do :)

The characters look great!!! Do you have an idea on what they're going to do?

SittingDucky
04-25-2008, 09:58 AM
pozdrav :) well, i have a vague story in my mind..im doing much of that on the fly, its not a great way to work but there is no time. i think i will make a 30 sec trailer, few longer shots cut to bits and pieces and mixed...that way i can avoid worrying too much about direction and continuity. the story is clichee about human kind that is corrupted by an alien race. after fifth world war earth was completely devastated and the peaceful neodolphin race came to help and teach. other alien races also came but to exploit. one of them is the seductive group of aliens that never appears directly but uses religion to manipulate people on top into hate towards the neodolphins, telling them how they came here to trick the human kind and turn them into slaves. evil aliens armed humans and eventualy all neodolphins were outcast, and their leader crucified. so, its about some old war between those two alien races, humans are used here as a tool for a revenge against neodolphins. i guess i will concentrate on the crucifiction shots, including the beating and torture executed by the guardians. its an idea i got becouse of Easter timing of this challenge : ))

modeling update. its about to be finished, i decided to make him gloves, partly because hands are hard to do and there is no time, and dark or dark red gloves would make him look more evil and his pale head will be more in focus. the head is huge, so i'll maybe do some proportions tweak before the rigging.. this character will be static for the most part so there will be no need for a cloth sim. i may do some morph targets for folds tho...
cheers

Hey, just saw your bad man turntable. Modelling work is stunning! :surprised
I looked the model very carefullly to see some error but there is none :) Everything in place, for me.
Exept maybe one small detail, on the upper arm armour... there are some very specular skratches, maybe too specular? In the first second I could not say that they were a scratches or some kind of ornament...

Keep up, Ill surely watch your thread!

texturing has been completed for the most part..still need to do maps for the ear devices and his staff..i'm still experimenting with the clothing look and feel..i want it look metallic ..unlike normal cloth..and it should behave very heavy. i've also done some basic rigging for the body, and the face rig. i'll combine bones and morphs..

i guess this could get in the pre-vis. its a crowd test for the guardians. yesterday i wanted to try it at least..i made a lowpoly version of the model and rigged it on the biped that uses a free mocap walk loop...which isnt really a good loop but it was ok for a test : ) then i cached it and copied the guardians and offset the time and place..u can still see some of the obvious duplicates. a lot of postwork was done, i copied the layer and made more guardians for the background. i think this is a fairly easy solution for making a simple marching sequence, no direction changes. just a better mocap and a lot more individualy placed instances. oh, and they certanly need weapons :)

im doing a quick cathedral...i did one material yesterday and im using it for the whole building. so far its ok and very fun to do :) its a little part of it and it should get a lot bigger till tomorrow :)..im using instances and only few materials so im sure the render wont die. im really hoping to finish the modeling stuff this week so that i could start animating and rendering.

cathedral update..i did an occ pass and twaked it a little in ps, trying to see what the final render could look like. for now, i will animate the camera flying about it and zooming on the window where pope is appearing to hail the troops on the ground. so i'll model only the things that are visible in that shot, for now.

it looks brutal! :) how much time it takes to render?

SittingDucky
05-14-2008, 09:42 AM
tnx! the rendering took about 2 minutes in scanline...i guess the occlusion pass will take twice as much..i plan to make a long fly around it, so maybe i will render the small resolution needed for flv, if time becomes a problem : ))

i did a quick photoshop wires and cables hanging from the church to see how it could look. and the electrified spires..bats are a joke, but i could add something flying around if i have time : ))
i completed the alien pretty much, i will post some images soon.

work in progress...this is kind of strange animation to me : )) but i like it, i think it will look bizzarely brutal as i imagined it, afer postwork..oh, this is the first time im animating 3 characters in one scene, ever lol. its fun, but very exhausting..
its widescreen originaly..and the staffs that guardians are holding will be replaced by a new model..

This is great looking :buttrock: How one can achieve so many subtle motion in handkeyed animation? How long did you played with that shot?

SittingDucky
05-25-2008, 02:14 PM
thank you guys!
it was a fun thing to animate...i did the alien fall animation while i was skinning him and later i put the guardian on the side to kick him : )) i liked it so i tried to go a bit further by placing another guardian to throw him to the floor...that worked, so i tried to make him grab his head and push him even more..that felt like a brain surgery to do, since i had to use link contraints :wip: i think i spent 4-5 days total on that...this shot should continue as the camera looks up and sees the cables going out of the pole and conecting with the huge net above..net goes to that cathedral...the whole shot is suposed to be seen thru another alien's eyes, which will become obvious later on. i'm planning to do a 30 -40 seconds total, including some panoramic shots of the cathedral...i better hurry :D

icedeyes

i like how the rendering turned out..although i would like to improve some things in animation. i will leave it be for now and move on to finish animating next big shot with the pope. there will be some details added later, like the wounds and blood decals on the floor and guardians. and some random particles flying around.. the fade ins and outs will look like the injury screen effect in Call of Duty lol.
originaly i animated this in 30 fps, then i slowed it down to 25, its less smooth and somehow more real..hope you like.

SittingDucky

danke Dietrich : )) yes im thinking about expanding it and adding sound of course..it was a lot of work spent on modeling and rigging all those guys so i'll defnitelly play with them more.

actually the ending could be interpreted as ''happy'' too..guardian killed the main bad guy to save the alien

...or he just wanted too eat the alien :D
..or he was an alien too : )

anyway..in my mind..the guardian had a little bit of human feelings inside of him left and he wanted to save the life of that alien, even if that meant killing another human...i think that fits best with the ''relations'' theme here..
so they might escape the planet, or other guardians may find them and kill them :)

deadrockboy
06-24-2008, 09:03 AM
...maybe then you need another shot of guardian, or smth. To show his change of heart or mind.

Perhaps alien looking at guardian and screeming: "Father... please....father..." :)
And later he tells alien to tell his sister that he was right about... :):)

A anyway... don't mind me :) I just haven't had a coffee yet... :)

SittingDucky
06-25-2008, 07:08 AM
tnx AIR!

i do facial riggs just with simple helpers affecting parts of the face..then i combine that with a few morph targets that i use mostly for mouth ( doing the b, m, p ) and eyes. when you animate all that, u get more natural and nonlinear feel..plus i used a lot of noise controllers on top of almost every helper's position or rotation.. =))
