View Full Version : An easier way to optimizing your TEX folder?

Sometimes my TEX folders get overloaded with textures that I eventually end up not needing in my final renders. Is there a way for C4D to just trash my unused TEXs and just leave the final needed ones.

Thanks

just run the "save project" function

it will create a new directory, C4D file, and tex folder with only files used

First go to your material manager and click function>remove unused materials (you can also click function>remove duplicated materials). Now go to file>save project and save it somewhere. The folder will have all the c4d files needed and the textures you are using (an only those).

I've suggested this as a future feature...

It would be nice if C4D looked for all relevant files upon opening the project and prompted you to locate the missing ones giving you the option to copy them to the 'tex' folder. That way when you open a file you know everything is there before you try to render. This could work for textures, sound files, etc.

Since I often work with other animators across the internet, this would be super handy. Plus it would also help when opening old projects.

Thoughts?

if you switch the AM to texture mode then it lists all of the textures used in the scene and whether any are missing.

Simon,

Thanks for the great tip. It's not quite as easy as having C4D automatically prompt you for missing assets upon opening a project (or selecting an option to do so), but it certainly does the trick.

I find that most things I want to do are in C4D, I just have to learn where they are.

Another way: Open the selection/structure-information from the windows-menue. In the AM, you'll find some information about textures and an easy way to exchange textures for the complete scene.

ahem. this is indeed the full description i should have given in my post - my only excuse is that i didn't have cinema available to me when i posted that rather terse snippet of info.

you can access the texture info through the window menu or by switching the AM mode to info manager.

thanks for the clarification ollle.

I've had this before and never found the culprit.

My Save Project has quit working. It will save the file, but not create a 'tex' folder and copy all the textures there.

Anyone have this problem before and know of a work around?

never heard of a such a problem, I'd contact tech support with a detailed description of your version and installation history. My guess is it has something to do with a corrupt installation

I think I'd just prefer, when you render and the "missing texture" message pops up, to have a "locate file" button with which we'd tell c4d where the file is. Instead having this pop up every time we open the file, because we might not want to render in the first place.
Now we have to find the right materials, at the right channels and replacing the textures from there.

Or a great feature would be to have the option of saving everything in use in a single file like blender does... That would be awesome.

You get such an option (find file) when you use the save project command.

I tried a new project with only one character in it (one mesh, and one material). Save Project worked as expected. But in my large project (they all tend to be large) the Save Project doesn't work. So I don't think it's a corrupt installation.

I'll contact tech support and see what they say.

Thanks,
Terry

It happenned to me a couple of times with big projects, but not lately, I think it was with version 9.5.
I don't remember what I did, sorry, just some tips here:

Did you remove all non-used material?
Do you have PNGs textures? Sometimes they cause problems.
Do you have Quicktime installed?
Did you try to copy the whole scene in a new project and Save project again?

Cheers,
Andras
