I am starting out trying to learn about compositing - I was just wondering - how good are Blender's current capabilities?
I once read an article in a magazine about it - is it on par with something like Shake?

It is certainly behind Shake and it doesn't have any motion tracking/camera stabilization tools. It's curve based rotoscoping is a bit awkward, and its green screen and other matting capabilities are certainly quite a bit behind what is available in Shake and similar (although I've seen some really excellent green screen keying done within Blender).

Other than those limitations it is fairly reasonable and being integrated with the rendering pipeline is a strong advantage for 3D work.

just a note that my comments are based on discussion with people who make use of Blenders compositing and other compositing tools - I don't make much use of it myself.
