Title: Kaizers Orchestra album art
Name: Matt Pain
Country: Norway
Software: Maya, mental ray, Photoshop

Client: Kaizers Orchestra

People Involved:

Bjørn Harald Myhre: Art Director & Photographer, Textures
Myself: Modeling, Lighting, Rendering, Textures
Kent Løset: Textures

Software: Maya, Mental Ray, Photoshop.

We were approached by the Norwegian band Kaizers Orchestra to create the profile for their up and coming album Maskineri.

The concept behind our idea of a "Kaizers Cinema" came from how the Kaziers music has been described as being composed in a somewhat similar way to that of a film.

The dark aesthetic was appropriate to fit the bands existing profile. They did not want anything too bright and clean and wanted to steer clear from a "CG" look, while still maintaing a slight fantasy look.

Kaizers wanted their cover to be exclusive and standout a little from a more typical photographic cover, so a lot of time was spent on the album.

The band went through a few changes in descions during the process which made life a little harder, the album name was changed and the main sigh was remodeled a few times.

Post was important to to make the image look a little less 3D, film noise was added and also some painting was done.

Eveything was modeled in Maya and photographed textures were used and painted over in photoshop, rendered in Mental ray with final gather and HDRI.

Check out Kaizers Orchestras music at: kaizers.no & myspace.com/kaizerso

Would love to hear your ideas, all c&c welcome.

wow! That´s excellent work, man. I love the whole concept and the final result is very homogeneous/harmonious. (Nice idea with the film reel texture on the CD itself... :buttrock: )

5 stars!

Incredible mood. Invites me to buy the album. The band must find it hard to reach the high level of the record's artwork! I'll check Myspace...

Edit: Really funny the guy at the door of the reference building. Is he saying "no pictures, please, go away"? Hahaha:D

Thanks a lot for the comments, its cool to see what everyone thinks.

The album did well here in Norway, i think it was number 1 for some weeks so that was cool to see the work everywhere.

Their music is pretty interesting and different, really worth while checking out on myspace, its quite dark so i think the art seemed to fit well.

I was a bit bummed that they ended up wanting the majority of the cg background blurred to put emphasis on the bands name and album title, i understand, but a lot of my modeling work was lost, hehe, no worries.
If you look at the version without the band infront its not blurred so you can see the details alittle better.

haha, and carlos, i have no idea what the guy is saying. I found the reference on google, its funny, i never thought about it, but it really seems like thats what hes doing, "get out of here ya little bastards!"

Once again, thanks so much for the comments.
