i want to creat a sphere, for the sake of discussion, that will crack open, and visible light rays will shoot out of the cracks. i plan to do the cracking open effect using the sphere's shader, that woh't be a problem. however, does anyone have any ideas on how to get the lightrays to come out?

i tried putting an omni light in the center and applying volume light to it. the problem is that i have to turn on shadow casting to keep the light from shining through the sphere before it cracks open. so if i were to use an opacity map to make the cracks, the light rays wouldn't shine through, you would just see a glow.

does anyone have any ideas on how to pull this off? maybe another way to do it?

thanks very much

Using a map is going to be tricky. Then again, using geometry, particles, etc. will be tricky as well.

If the material you are using is double sided, than it could work, though I'm not convinced an omni is going to do the trick.

I'll have to think about this one. I'll run through some ideas tomorrow at work and see if anything pops into my head.

Good luck, man!

woudnt making the sphere cracking with a particle system based on the geometry of the object be much easier then you could use your omni with its volume
