This a Matte I'm reworking, I'm trying to create a city that has been built on top of it's self for hundreds of years. I'm having difficulties with the left side of the painting, I want that to be the foreground and I'm have a lot of trouble with the scale and getting it to sit with the rest of the painting, Any crits and suggestion are welcome.
Thanks
Ryan

Ryan- Cool stuff so far, could be great. Just work out your lighting and perspective and make sure all your buildings have a place in the scene, like they all function together. It should all be worked out in the concept sketch if you did one. Make sure to get it all in there and sitting right and looking good before jumping into photos.

The left hand side is giving you a hard time, I know why.
The white building is not helping at all. Right to check where the focal point is just squint your eyes. Notice where the dark tones are, now look where the highlights are. White building is drawing your eye. Right flip the picture upside down in photoshop, and check the balance. The white building is still unbalancing the image.
White building again! look at the lighting it is back to front compared to the rest of composition. the shadows are on the wrong side. Your uncounscious brain knows this that is why it makes you feel uncomfortable.
Solution, well my solution would be get rid of it, make it into a tunnel mouth, have a road coming out and bend it into the horizon.
Being a bit rude, I actually like this
Cheers

Ryan, where did you get those buildings. I mean is there packages out there or did you just take buildings you found and crop them allindividually which would be a ton of work IMO. I would like to do a scene of a city but when I find a building I need to delete the background. Are there any techniques that can help me delete the background faster than making a clipping path?
Thanks

Marquee tool loosely round the item you want Control/shift together then press I then delete. It must not be a background layer, if it is duplicate it (control J) and then turn of the visibility for the back ground layer. Then use the mask tool and carefully paint out the areas you dont want.
For ease do all the cutting in individual files then drag and drop onto main file.
There are hundreds of ways to get a item and seperate it from its background.
Matte painting is hard work. There are no real fast shortcuts, you have to learn photoshop and that is by trial and error.

Paint Guy - The Buildings are Photographs that I removed the background from. I can be fairly quick if the background is clean. Most of mine had a clear blue sky behind then and I could quickly mask of the building by selecting the blue sky with the magic wand tool in photoshop. I also modelled the city in Maya and I have just been placing the photo on top of a render. I also got a Texture pack from Marlin Studios http://www.marlinstudios.com/products/st7/st7.htm It has a lot of real great textures and photos.
Hope this Helps and good luck on your Matte Paintings
