Hello there. I was wondering if the next best tool in giving a low-res mesh more detail is by using displacement maps done in ZBrush or Mud Box. I'm talking about detailed meshes used for animation. I want to know if a mesh with a displacement map looks good in animation.

Yes displacement map does look good in animation. That's what they use a lot of the time along with Normal, bump and specular maps, They all ad to the realism. :)
