nemirc 05-10-2003, 10:50 PM Hullo!
This is my first post in the finished work forum. I felt like sharing this sword I made for a "monthly challenge".

It's a good sword, but the wooden stuff you put under it (the table or whatever) is awfully distracting and too bright for this work to be fully realized... The shadows should be sharper, and also some reflection of a room around (either map it or create the room) on the blade helps make it seem more real.
Maybe show the edge of a table... or it sticking out of a cut tree stump... be creative!

yea. he's right. for this kinda a thing you need an evironment to be reflected. nice desing though. come back to us with anothere render. for the environment try a sphere with an hdr image. like that one thats in a forest of sorts.

Uhmm.... what's an HDR image?

HDRI stands for high dynamic range image. it is kinda like a normal picture but is usually used for realistic lighing in 3D scenes. they are really cool. they are called high dynamic because they are a collective of images shot from different f-stops. then when they are put into hdri format you can do things like change exposure.
you can download some lightprobes from this site.
or you can just click here (http://www.debevec.org/Probes/all_probes.zip) to download all of the ones available there. the file is kinda big.
and you can download the free software that lets you edit and create HDR images here. there are also some tuts here.
http://www.debevec.org/HDRShop/
if you still have questions just do a search for hdri in your favorite search engine
I had a lot of fun with these once I found out about them
