View Full Version : VERY First Face: Girl
JonasNoell 05-10-2003, 09:29 PM Hello everybody
I just started to model this face today and this is how far I came so far ;) It is my very first face, a tutorial named "Joan of Arc" helped me A LOT! I didn't followed the tutorial for 100%l because I wanted to make the face look more photorealistic and not too comic like like it was in the tut. All this took me about 5 hours of excessive work so far and my fingers are already hurting from pressing this damn mousebutton

Did I make anything wrong? Any suggestions? Feel free to comment and post

Sweet model, my only critiques are i think the cheeks are too big. It looks like she came from the dentist and has huge cotton balls in them. Also i don't know if its the angle or what, but her eyes seem kinda far apart. Other than that its awesome!

Thanks a lot ;)
I will check out what you said. The thing with her cheeks already caught my eye but I was too tired to fix it now. Will give her some tweaking tomorrow. Some for the thing with the eyes. Thanks for helping me here

Nice work !!
but the eyes is the thing that I thought was wrong, try creating a double egde where you want the actual form of the eye it will give her a better look !!
hope you can use the advice and sorry about my english !!
if you want to model a photorealistic head in stead of a cartoon you shouldn't have taken the refs from the joan of arc tut
(eyes are to big and should be higher in the skull )
but i think you could model a realistic head as easy
nice work

Thanks for all the nice replies and tips. I tried to follow your guys guideline, rezized the eyes and moved them forward, worked on the mouth and cheeck area and a bit on the eyelids.

Did it improve? What else can be done?

Ok little update. Added ears and redefined again the proportions of the head, eyes and stuff. Also added a basic (quick and very basic) lightning. C&C appreciated...

I see this is coming along nicely! Showing good progress from the first image!
This time, I think the ears are too far back, but that may just be the camera angle... and there's still something wrong with her cheeks! Try using reference images from www.fineart.sk (http://www.fineart.sk), they have some really useful photos there!
Please keep posting updates!

Thanks a lot!
I think I will download some refs from there and try to adjust my the head towards the foto.
About the position of the ears, I just placed them right HERE (http://www.josh.ch/phpmywebmin/_uploads/cANt/Head8.jpg) Is this wrong?

I must agree, you are heading in the right direction. Keep working on it.
You may need to check your model against some anatomical references, even when you are going for a cartoonish look, because you need to know the rules before you are to bend them.
Here is my thinking about the neck/skull (it was too tall I think)
But then again, that's me!

Well looks nice, I wish to be able to get the same results.
GO On ;)

its coming along nicely! I think the nose and eyes and lips are perfect, the only thing i would change are those cheek bones.
I really like your new model. It shows great improvement over the last one.:applause:
GREAT JOB!

I agree with the above comments on the cheeks - they look a little fuller than they should. The cheekbones can be high if you want, but look just lateral to the corners of the mouth -- the cheeks shouldn't be so full there (unless you want a bejowled beauty).

haha, heiyuu, about your quote under your name... I used to link to my drive all the time :D Cant, your model is headed in the right direction, but the bone structure is lacking a lot of form that resembles a real humans face . In terms of photorealism, I assume that means your ending render looks like a photograph quality image, as if taken by a camera. it's easiest to achieve a photorealistic effect if the model resembles something that we can recognize easily, I believe. I might be wrong. And so, if you are to correct the cheek bones and maybe the forehead, it looks a little off to me, then you'd be on the perfect track. the lips and nose and stuff look really good. The eyes are maybe a little different from the usual, but I'm not going to complain. :)
Oh yeah, I'm a fan of your work :D Especially your 2d stuff.

I loaded some refs from fineart.sk and tried to adapt my model towards them so that the proportions will look more correct. I mainly resized the head moved the position of the ear and edited the whole head form. Also worked a bit on the nose and the position of the eyes, improved the cheecks and stuff.
I also made a short quicktime video that shows the whole head rotating, would be great if some of you could download it and say me what you think (~1.28 MB, Quicktime *.mov format), and if there are still proportion bugs.

maxmare: Tried to edid the neck according to your pic, but not that much as you did, but quite ;)
celezionka: Well I liked to give give her some cheeks and not that streched as they are normally so that she isn't too bony looking in her face. Anyway I redid them according to your critics and made them more inconspicuous.
Aerestis: Hehe right stuff! Will keep on working, thanks for the nice words anyway ;)
The rest: Thanks a lot, too.
