View Full Version : muscle simulation?
Does Maya have muscle simulation? I've heard and read that it has, but seen no evidence of it.
As i feel the whole premise of surface modeling is flawed, i've wanted to shift into muscle-based modeling/animation for some time, but no real solutions have existed.
Of course big studios have used this technique for some time, but, correct me if i'm wrong, they use in-house solutions.
So, if there is any way to use true muscle simulation in maya, please tell me :)

I believe there is a way to construct muscles in MAYA, only how to do that, I dont know.
Ive read a tutorials about it, so thats how I base my answer.
This tutorial shows you the concept behind it. It's up to the artist to model correct muscles, placement, and deformation.

If you don't want to do it this way, you can wait for Absolute Character Tools to come out for Maya.

Maya has no native muscle system however it has everything you need to make one. Currently I am working to implement the fusiform muscle model outlined in this paper:

Not terribly difficult to understand or implement but you will definately need to know MEL. Generating a surface over these muscles after they are created is whole seperate topic.

Do you know of a way to get biped info [animation] onto bones?
Be it bones in Maya? who are have you?
thanks mads, that's pretty much what i meant =)
Lyr: the skin texture would have to be a displacement map, right?
actually, i'm a MEL inadept. i use XSI, but since the price cuts, dunno, looks to me that maya will be even better spread than before.

No. Skin texture would be done however you normally do it.
