Hey everyone, I'm new in this site, and it seems to me to be the best one over the web. anyways.. I have now been working on 3dmax for around 3 years, and I mostly modeled cars but also many other things, I just always had one problem, which confused me most of the time. I always made the exterior of cars and vehicles, but the interior, I cant do because I dont know how to add more material slots. Is it really a maximum of around 18 or such or is there a way to add more so i can add materials to buttons, seats, etc.?

Here is some of my work so you would know my level at this moment.

I would appreciate all the help.

Hi,

anyway in all 3DSmax has 24 slots in total..........& you could use multi sub obj material if you like to, or you can also delete any existing used slot afterwards using them.. .....so that if you want to re edit any material , choose any existing slot and just use picker to pick up the material (which will only exist in the scene but not in your editor slots.)
Alternatively you can also save your materials in material liberary before deleting them, so you have only 24 slots but you can reuse them again if required.....

hope it helps:thumbsup:

ok thanks alot, so basically there are only 24 slots in the scene i'm working with, at max, and these materials can be saved in the material library, and I can use them again any time, but i cannot have more than 24 material slots being used in one scene at the same time.

thanks alot for help ;)

As far as I know, you can use as many material slots as you like in 3ds max. When you have "filled up" the slots you see in the material editor, just click the Utilities/Reset Material Editor Slots and voila, you have a new blank material editor. The materials are still in the scene, but you just make space for new ones - nothing is deleted.

QFA.
there can be unlimited materials in a scene. The max-24 slots that you see are material display slots
