View Full Version : New skinshader in Maya 5

I've noticed that with the bonus tools to 5.0 you'll get a skin shader which will simulate human skin.
It almost looks like it's using SSS and makes the material translucent. Has anyone tried this new material?

It's the same as the old skin shader. It's not true SSS, just simulates the light interaction with human skin based on KM theory. The method comes from an old Siggraph RCN from 99/2000 I think. It's essentially the same as the Skin shader that comes with RAT. pretty good I think, but has its limitations. For instance it's a pain in the arse to play with the parameters...

No thank you,pretty cool shader!
Is Alias skinshader available for Mac OSX? I tried to search for it but couldn't find it.
SubScatter (http://lightengine3d.com/index2.html) is a really nice shader. It's not really a skin shader, but a subsurface scattering shader.
TranVol 3.0 seems to be coming out soon. Maybe that'll simulate skin shading more accurately.
looks cool, but no OSX version:(
