THE CHALLENGE:
Click for Rules (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=139&t=592384)

Render a realistic/fantasy type animation of Planet Earth exploding or experiencing huge explosions.

The entry with the best VISUALIZATION will be selected by an open vote. (You may do the entry anyway way you want. HARD simulation , or an FX piece with live action, as long as the final piece has a SIMULATION of an exploding Gaia AKA Earth. The winner will get bragging rights and a small banner designed by me.

Keep in mind that the planet might survive (like in Deep Impact, Galactica) or explode in multiple pieces( like Alderaan in Star Wars).

The shots should be space based, but you may do earth POV (like in Deep Impact) if you wish.

Voting:
For this challenge we will experiment with only ONE category:

BEST SIMULATION
Here are the entries for the challenge:

To bad I can't view the one from Daniel Amedoda
the link gives me a limit exceed image from photobucket.

but for now

Limbi:
Excellent work, renders and animation look superb, although I think it took to long to reach the end, but I suppose the real thing doesn't go really fast either, I think it could have been done faster. (after couple of minutes I was like...come on.)

Reinhart82:
It looks good, the explosion is nice.
The cracks look painted on though, but excellent job on the explosion.
I missed a little movement from the earth.

Alexander sokolov:
The style and mood is great, loved the black and white going on really awesome.
as for the movie itself, it felt a little unfinished..but at the same time, it has its own style.

Daniel Amedoda:
Sorry man can't comment yet havent seen it yet.

Setpixel:
Although your project caught my eye the most.
I was alittle over the top, the Effects, animations all were superb, but we only see the impact, the movie had a 1 minute credit.
As far as software and quality concerned, you guys get my vote, but the award goes for best Simulation.

So I vote for Alexander Sokolov, for now this might change when I see Daniel Amedoda's

My vote - Alexander Sokolov

And wow, and also...a second wow for…"there are people like myself who do untextured animations out there!"...I feel less alone now...I think that I knew there was, but I just don’t come across it very often, or well, I don’t watch many animations like I use to, but yeah, that was nice to see somebody who maybe feels the same way. There’s many reasons for it mind you...many reasons to make a untextured animation...mainly because its solo animaton work, but yeah I feel (and its subjective) that they feel very clean and nice to look at (if well lit)

And well lit it was...I think his animation is very nicely edited and framed, music really went to the edit. And good build up from close up shot to gradually show the universe it's set in. Liked it a lot. I loved the floating things in the air also...sort of like ash or I don’t know what, but that gave it a nice erie feel for sure...upped the atmosphere.

All the animations were good here, your all filmmakers showing that you have great potential to go further, and that's what it's all about.

SetPixels third last shot, is truly awesome.

Dominique van Limburg's animation is very beautiful throughout and gets very nice at the end I felt. Great editing and music choice. Loving the long takes.

Reinhart82's animation is very nicely done, but speeds up at the very end, I think had it remained slow throughout, it would have worked better. I love the way the earth gradally cracks and the glow on that is great.

Verry Touching. I could connect with this short.

@ Dominique van Limburg Stirum (Limbi)
I loved the way you handled the first shot on the impact of the meteor.
Maybe you could have added some vibrations to the camera.

@ Reinhart82
Cool usage of Lava, maybe a little to soon?

@ Daniel Amedoda
Sorry could not have seen yours.

@ SetPixels: December 21
Very cool, love the the building shots, nice VFX.
The meteors in space looked a bit to fake.

Great job guys. very cool

Arghhhhhh i cannot decide between Setpixels and Dominique van Limburg Stirum, both are very good, setpixels looks more refined for a movie but i really like the feeling i get from Dominique van Limburg Stirum's piece i feel more engrossed, more like it is actually happening with the sounds and camera angles etc.

Sorry setpixels it will have to be

Dominique van Limburg Stirum who gets my vote.

The best one by far is Dominique van Limburg Stirum (Limbi)'s.

The other videos are too short and hardly even show FX.

Though I could not view Daniel Amedoda's. (Next time mirror it on Youtube)

Thanks for all the votes,
We are really happy with the result as it was our first time in CG challenges.
We really enjoyed this competition. Even been very busy at work we managed to complete the animation. We know we left many details unfinished but the overall result made us really glad.

Thanks Roberto Ortiz,
We think this challenge was a great opportunity to learn and work as a team!! Its incredible the different solutions we see on those challenges.

Congratulations to all the entries,
All the results were very impressive, and it gets even more impressive when its done by one single person!! Good job everybody and hope to see you on the next one!!
