View Full Version : Vehicle: Breader Car
heiyuu 05-10-2003, 09:45 AM Hey all. This is the first work I am posting here.
Beware I am the rebel and am not spell checking. It is also 4am so my grammer will suffer.
It is a ricer car, meaning it has a lot of pointless "aerodynamic" stuff modified to it.
I will post the images like a story in chronological order with commentary. I will also tell how I did things.
Max 5.0 scanline rendere :)

Concept sketch I did during Computer Science Class(was a slow day).
http://www.angelfire.com/gundam/aumain/car_wip/car_wip_sketch.txt
---
This what I got after the first two days of work. I started out(after setting up reference pictures on planes) with a plane the length of the car. it was 20 units long and 8 high and I added meshsmooth. I then roughtly shaped it according to the reference pictures.
The hood, headlights, front bumper and rear were all the orginal plane until I detatched them. After detatching I selected the outter edges and gave them a negative extrude, causing a nice round edge (well nice to my eyes).
The air vent on the side of the bumper had to be a seperate object because meshsmooth was being a jerk. (I only make it a separate object after waisting a day trying to get it to look right as one object... bah!)
Corner lens (under headlights), front grill, hood wing and diffusor were created as seperate objects too.
BTW, S15 silvia is my favourite headlights. (BMW M3 in close 2nd!)
http://www.angelfire.com/gundam/aumain/car_wip/car_wip001.txt
---
Added a roof, windshield and the thingy under the windshield (that holds the wipers).
http://www.angelfire.com/gundam/aumain/car_wip/car_wip002.txt
---
Side Mirrors, door windows and Roof scoop (like rally cars). I dont really like the rally scoop and more than likely I will redo them.
http://www.angelfire.com/gundam/aumain/car_wip/car_wip003.txt
Oh, and btw, it is a model for my final animation project for my highschool multimedia class. Only available to grade 12 of course :P
I inspired my friend Bane with this car and he is making an audi A8 using my technique (and a 1/2 ass tutorial I gave him via msn lol).
And $20 to the guy who can figure out why I say this is a bread car (refernce pics are a big giveaway).

Rear windshield and rear door windows. I also made the tail lights. R43 is my favourite. I deliberately left the rear fender not "moded" to align with the lights to show this is a conversion. Yuo can also see the rear windshield and the the panel thingy not aligned at all! Same with the panel between the two door windows.
http://www.angelfire.com/gundam/aumain/car_wip/car_wip004.txt
---
New Side skirts (replacing the temporary box lol)
http://www.angelfire.com/gundam/aumain/car_wip/car_wip005.txt
---
The back view of the skirts. Also made a rear bumper.
http://www.angelfire.com/gundam/aumain/car_wip/car_wip006.txt
---
Fixed the alignment problem with the skirts and the rear fender. If you look closely you can see the negative of the front bumper. Trippy!
http://www.angelfire.com/gundam/aumain/car_wip/car_wip007.txt
---
I learned from my first mistake with the front bumper, and this time I skip trying to make it one peice and I made the air vent on the rear bumper a seperate object (after 1 try in making all on object of course hehe.) Added reverse fog lights. Also visible is the rain deflector on the door windows. I am thinking of making them chrome like on Audi's. Barely visible is the second roof scoop (to give smogy traffic air to the rear passengers during those urban rally races lol)

Better view of the sunroof, two roof scoops, and new hood scoop(which is just a copy of the front roof scoop[yeah I lazy]). Rear roof scoop is designed after the subaru wrx hood scoop. And the front one is designed after the Mitsu Lancer Evo Rally scoops. Also made wipers(designed after the 2003 Mugen Civic Type R, because it was the only car in all the magazines I have that had a close and clear pic of the wipers ).

What rice car is complete without the overused Z3 fenders? The rear fenders sport mr2 vents. I think the mr2 vents look like trash.
http://www.angelfire.com/gundam/aumain/car_wip/car_wip010.txt
---
Mr2's Looking better, but still weird and wrong . At some point I redid the front roof scoop. I dont remember. Probably here.

Ok now I think the mr2 vents look good.

Ahh the glory of the wings...I mean, what rice car is complete without really really big wings? The roof wing is a design I took off of come civic hatch (I liked how it looked really messed up lol). The rear/main wing is that carbon fibre one I've seen in magazines. I was originally putting a lancer style wing there but my friend wanted one of these...

I don't know why I did this render. Looks jsut the same as the above one, just a different angle, but whatever.

Well that's it for today(friday.. well saturday at 4am). Been working on this since monday. Tommorrow I will make brake rotars and calipers, rims, wheels, and under body diffusor (to redirect air to cool places like the brakes). I will aso put some mesh where there are vents and holes. interiors comes later (if I have time). Sunday I will add proper materials and a lotta stickers!

Wow, amazing. The sketch itself is really good, but the modelling is awesome, and you really sticked to your sketch, not like many people, who make sketches just for fun, as it seems ;).
Nothing to criticise yet, but keep it coming!!

Wow I was just editing my psot for typos I caught while reading my own post (i like to read my own stuff lol). Got a great comment alredy. Thanks man, I like you name, it reminds me of someone else's name lol *cough* me *cough*.
Yeah i've been sketching this car while bored at school a lot (I did atleast 10 sketches). I was modelling some other stuff for my final animation but I came to the realisation that there is no way I would get 1:30 min of animation done with that mesh (it was a 50k+ polys model and it was only 1/2 done.) I am making this car to make an initial D style animation.
Thanks for the great comments aboutt the sketch! Thanks for the great comments aboutt the model too!
Well time for sleep lol.

Just and Update. After having my coffee I made mounts for the rear wing. I gave it hydraulics so it's now a self adjusting wing. I also made some screws. The mount on the trunk gets no screws because it is covered in a fiberglass housing (so thiefts cant unscrew and steal the wing lol).

how did you go about modeling the Z3 Shark gils on the side, above the front wheels? :hmm:
Great work, anyways.... keep it up, cant wait to see textures/materials

Thanks for the comments guys.
I wish I could be a riceboy... buy being a highschool student I don't have the funds.
Gremlin: It's really hard to explain how I made the fenders. I included a link to the wire if you are interested and I will try to explain as best I can.
I am assuming you use or are familir with max 5.
It has a lot to do with understanding meshsmooth (something I still have trouble doing).
I started with a box shape on my fender, I then moved the vertices so that is became a slanted box (like a diamond).
I tesselated it until i had four horizontal segments and I got rid of the vertical segments using weld vertices.
I gave the hole diamond a negative bevel so it looks indented. I then selected each "gil" and gave them a deeper bevel (it was 10 times the amount I gave to the diamond). I moved the rear vertices of each gil and aligned them with the front and welded them so I get that Z3 look.
I then grabbed the polys where the 4 holes should be and gave them a negative extrude (so they overlap, Z3 holes overlap right?) and I deleted the poly to give it a hole.
I basically select the poly's I wanted to have sharpe edges and hit the inset bottom, this makes meshsmooth arround those areas less round (and more pointy lol)
You can see I also cut the intire diamond near the top and bottom of the four holes, this is because meshsmooth make them round (and I wanted a square shaped hole, not a pill shape)
I am sorry if I am not making any sense with my words, but here is the wireframe.
Z3 Wire Frame (http://www.angelfire.com/gundam/aumain/car_wip/car_wipz3wire.txt)
I maybe make a Z3 tutorial with pictures if I have time.

Goddamn what a slow day!!!
I spnt about 80% of my time doing research on car parts and, 10% sketching them so I can understand how they work (I need to for animation). 5% sitting there and thinking... and 5% modelling.
Anyways Here are the brake rotors, calipers, suspension and steering. Red calipers... same materials as the tail lights lol.

Well today wasnt very progressive. Spent a lot of time getting the wheel to turn right and making sure the suspension doesnt get in it's way. I still got some stuff done, not as much as the Grand turismo I played thou. Hehehehe Escudo 0wnage!
Here are the new brake design. It's more compact that the original (mainly, I scaled it down relative to the rotor and i made the little bar at the bottom point inwards). I was still working on the wheel wells at this point. If you look closely you can see the screw holes do not align properly. This is because i was working with a number of segments that does not divide by 5 (24). I thinking I might change this because you can see the segments in the rotor (the edges do not look smooth). And dont worry, those tires and rims are only temporary for me to get a feel of how the brakes will look relating to the rims.

Here you can get a feel of how big the brake calipers are. I had to make the distant from the rotor to the rim pretty big. I finished the front wheel wells. I made most of the underbody diffusor. You can see little scoops right infront of each wheel well. They are there to get new air and cool down the brakes. I also fixed some problems I noticed from the top render.

Tommorrow I have school. I seem to get more work done at school. Guess it's the environment (it's so boring the most entertaining thing to do is 3DS MAX).
Bane (the soon-to-not-be-farmboy making the A8) will show me how to use HDRI with brazil (test version so we are limited in stuff :( ). I think the car will still look crazy good even with the test version.
I think I wil get the rear diffusor, exhaust and the rest of the suspension done (I jsut have to mirror it and then alter it a little for the rear wheels). If all goes right I will make Stickers and Decals tommorrow night after school (after counterstrike of course!). Accessories like foglights, grills (for the many many vents), intercooler, license plate and other stuff will come too.
And about the comment about the edges being too round... I thoguht about it really long and hard, and I have come to the conclusion that I am too lazy to "fix" it. Would be nice thou.

Hi Fakie! Thanks for your comments!
I cant't get to sleep (maybe cuz I had 3 kettles of tea throughtout the day and ice tea the rest, w00t!) so I decided to looky at your site. Nice stuff.
Few questons for you (and I pray to god you check back my thread and reply).
How did you get that sweet shine on your pen and how long did it take to render (I want to do that to my future rims, rain deflector, headlights and a few other stuff).
Did you give that cost of your airsoft gun in US funds or what? I want one. I play a lot of counterstrike and it would be 0wnage if I showed up to my school's lan parties and started capping everyone with it (it's a BB/pellet gun right?). I am still not sure if I want a paint or pellet gun. Good cost on the m4A1 btw, it's my favourite gun in counterstrike.
EDIT: And sorry to hear about your troubles getting your gun.

Ahh monday was another slow day. School was out because of feild day (kinda like schoo olympics) so a friend and I played some Grand Turismo and DDR. Not very progressive until after I took a very very long nap (as I had a sleepless night before) heheheh...
During that sleepless night I did get some useful stuff down. I read about how suspension works, and also stuff about tires. I learned waht those funky numbers mean. Next time I go wheel shopping I'd be prepare :)
Found out that steering isn't perfectly horizontal but it's usually at an angle, I thought about it and I decided to keepy my steering perfectlly horizontal for simplicty's sake.
Anyways, I didnt get much done (sorry!).
I did however get the rear diffusor in. I was also successful in minmizing the suspension set up (as I felt it was a little too big, and in minimization I can put wider tires!!!). I got a nice render of the car from the side. I think the other pics don't do the car justice because this angle just took my breath away. w00t! You can also get another view of the underbody diffusor and the vents that grab air from under the car and redirect them to the brakes (as cold/cool brakes work better than hot/warm brakes)

Here is a better view of the rear diffusor. You can also see the ghetto temp exhaust I made so get an idea of the space it will need (well acutally I just pulled a cylinder, I didnt make anything, hehe). I also raised the lower part of the bumper a little because I was looking at real pics of this type of bumper and I jsut had to "perfect" it.

I felt the "fins" of the rear diffusor were too big and low, so i fixed them. This would make it the 4th rear diffusor I made (the other 3 looked weird or I screwed up somewhere). I tells you, people that say planning is everything are 100% right! The hole diffusor stuff is taking way too long because I didnt sketch or plan them out. baaah! I still like the view of my wing thou ^_-

Well that's it for now. I gtg get read for school. Maybe Bane will finally teach my HRDI. Oh yeah he also says that nice pen Fakie made was HRDI so this is gonna be sweeeeet. I'd like to note that Bane says the tutorial I gave him via msn was not 1/2 assed. According to him it was "more like 1/100th(0.001%) assed".
After I talk with my instructor and a guy named Derran (really good at animation, I think he may be French or something) about rigging stuff with bones (aka "boning stuff"), I will get my suspension rigged so it behaves properly for animation.

thats looking mighting cool, I know what you mean by research, takes time but a load of fun to see it all go together, you should look at a GT leman racer suspension, the shock coil springs and such move from the rear to the front of the car and not up and down, a lever transfers the motion of up and down to front and rear,, crazy stuff if you know what I'm saying, it keeps things very low to the ground.
but anyways this is way cool and I love watchin others go thru lots of thought and building there creative models. I'm still working on mine,, trying to get everything squeezed under the hood.
one thing I would do,, maybe try to match the rear tail light assembly more to the flow of the body, if you know what I mean, doesn't seem to fit quite right yet.
later bro.
could you post a wire, there more fun to look at
awsome skills dude

Wow, this looks great! It's a "bread car" or "white bread car" because it's based on a Chevy Cav, right? Perfect bread mobile, its got all the cliches. Can't wait for the coffee-can muffler.
