View Full Version : Materials: help needed with transparant plastic
Arnage 05-10-2003, 09:35 AM I'm trying to recreate a material for a transparant plastic but i have a problem: how can i make the transparancy depth-dependant? I tried faking it with volume fog inside the object but that doesn't work. Does anyone know how to achieve this effect? (maybe with a script?)

What version of Max are you running? I'm not sure which versions this standard material is available in. But it sounds like you could do this with the standard translucent shader? Maybe some falloff maps in the opacity or translucent color rollout? I myself have not tried it. Just wondering if you have given that material a look.

I'm running max 5. I tried the translucent shader but it isn't thickness-dependant, which is what i need, i'm trying to recreate a real life model and the material get's less traparent there where it's thicker, without that my cgversion looks really fake.

What kind of transparent plastic are we talking about? Are you sure your problems are present because of not having transparency falloff? The enviroment is important when making transparent of reflective objects.
Check out this great render:
