pretty sweet stuff man...I dig the style. It has the gritty feel like the kid character in Gumo... except for being a skateboarder from the 80's Venice Beach. Could you maybe pose a turnaround of the character and maybe some wireframes. I'm very interested in seeing your edge looping.

Man, this reminds me of bboying... can't wait for "Planet B-Boy" to come out on DVD. It is already being shown in the USA right now but it won't in europe as i know...so atleast the DVD :D

Getting on the frontpage is great aswell!
Still working on the third part of the triptych.
After wich I'm planning to do more characters in this universe, more gritty, less colour.(contrast)
And do some actual storytelling, a comic, maybe some animation. (long term thing though)

Anyways, regarding it's mesh and such, it's a very simple low poly looped/quaded mesh, that after sculpted in hires was then posed and resculped on certain points, for the specific POV. Allthough the initial idea was to fully set him up for animation, I went for the straightforward approach. Gonna redo most of him and such though, with additional outfits etc. It's been too long since I've actually have seen personal work animated!!! :)

Here additional turn around, with wires on it was 1 black silhouhet though!

What made you want to do a piece like this? And what made you choose this specific lens as well as image size format? And also, were you uneasy at first choosing the green and pink for the pants, or is being bold something that comes naturally.

Hehe, and actually receiving that cgtalk award somehow means something, as I literaly started doing cg trough daily checking of cgtalk's frontpage from the very beginning. Time flies though as I look at my joining date...

Jesse Davis: The motivation behind this pieces (and most of the other) lies in simply being youngest in the 80's I suppose. Aside from that, looking at 80's skateboard ad's and for instance the thoughts of 80's california and miami (colours), bring instant inspiration. I tend to stray away from directly interpreting such images, I just use the collected image map thats in my mind, as I like to apply my own aesthetics.
Size and angle were logical steps, that came along with the concept of a tryptitch. So having 3 longer panels, looks pleasing. And having skateboarding as theme makes having a almost fisheye lens a logical look to try. It's also an effect of elongating and playing with perspective that I like in 2d, but I dont see it done in 3d too much.
Use of colour comes naturally/instinctively, it's also a bit like matchmaking, you try to make certain elements like eachtother, while at the same moment you make an other element pop out by feeling alone. At the end you want them to party all together, haha. My use of colour sometimes works and sometimes people dont get it. I love colours!!

I just used mental ray with final gather, and 2-3 lights. tres basic.
