LOS ANGELES, CA, May 08, 2003 -- Digital Interactive Systems Corporation
(DISC) will unveil DISCover®, a game console that plays unmodified PC
games, at a news conference in the press conference room of the Electronic
Entertainment Expo (E3) on Wednesday, May 14th, at 1:00 pm. The DISCover
Booth is #6551.

Since DISCover games are unmodified PC games, DISCover will launch with more
games than all other game consoles combined. Digital Interactive Systems
will demonstrate DISCover's technology for playing unmodified PC games on a
game console. This technology solves the "chicken and egg" problem: 1) you
can't sell consoles without games; 2) games are not developed for consoles
that don't sell. Since DISCover games are unmodified PC games, there's no
need to develop games for the DISCover. All of a publisher's PC games will
play, as is, on the DISCover. To have their PC games play on a console in
the living room publishers only need to ensure their games have been
registered. Consumer electronics firms and PC manufacturers can create
DISCover game consoles with the knowledge that the games will be there for
them. These DISCover game consoles will have the stunning graphics and
awesome audio of a PC, but without the hassles.

so . . why bother, it looks like the money is going to be simular to a computer anyway, and you miss all the other functions as well.

A hack at the most.

There is no way i'm touching that thing until they get a semi-decent website.

Impressive but odd. Those stats they listed, were those actually for the "console"? If so this thing is really nothing more than a PC with a funky controller.
If they have limited it to games only functions then it had better be damn powerful to make up for not just using your comp, though for the moment they certainly kick my comps case.
Might be a good render node if it is cheap enough.

Are they trying to sell this to someone who can actually market this? The idea is kind of cool but they dont seem to have much of a solid marketable product.

Looks like someone bought an OEM lot of the cappuccinoPC (http://www.cappuccinopc.com), and bundled in some (very cheap and nasty looking) extras.

Maybe they've got some bespoke software on there to make the PC element transparent, but judging by the web site they don't know their ass from their elbow anyway

My take at this stage. Reasonable idea, very badly implemented.

That's an understatement. :D In theory it sounds good, IN THEORY...

This thing will flop because your building a system around playing games in an unintended format- 640x480 NTSC. Almost all PC games rely on the user being able to read text and most text for PC games is small, which is fine for a PC Monitor but blurry and unreadable on televisions. The games in general will take a huge hit in quality. Ever seen a business presentation projected from a computer to a tv? They always look ugly.

Agree. This is not the first time someone come up with these kind of idea, actually I saw a similar thing somewhere early this year, and now it just disappeared.

so...do they only play pc games?.....no other console?

is it upgradable?

if not, then it will be out of date the second it hits the shelves...or sooner because pc games are continuously being made more resource hungry

at least with consoles developers know the hardware restriction

seems a bit kak

The main advantage of a PC is upgradability *ching*. If it cant update then after 6 months its usless for playing new games...

Back to the GeForce for me!

"Can it play lan games, hook up to a keyboard, run linux or some rendering app?"
Yes, Yes and yes. Its a OEM computer that I have seen in the computer markets out here in taiwan. Its very small which is why I have been looking at it for a render farm. It has firewire, lan @ 10mps and usb 2 ports on it. It realy is just a PC.
like Bradf0rd010 said check out

its the same thing.
