Im trying to start off making a desert scene for my abandoned city which im wanting to make in 3D. Im a bit frazzeled on how to start off making a desert like enviroment. I was thinking of making a height map for the land, but the only problem is I dont really know how to paint my height map to make it look like a desert or how I should approach such a task. Im trying to go for a red rocky desert type style.

Any ideas? what would be the best way to start off?

Are you going to use a game editor to create this scene? If yes, then you could create the terrain inside the editor. Otherwise you could block it out in a 3d program and then take it into Zbrush to sculpt it to your liking or just work inside your 3d program, sculpting it there. There are lots of ways to do it...

Vue 6 would be best to do this task. Vue 6 xstream can seamlessly intergrade with 3ds max scene file.
