"3D Furnace" (TM) is the name of my freelance company. I did up this graphic for my soon-to-be website. I'll add a subtle orange volumetric light coming from the top left in the final version. Opinions?

I particularly like the textures used.

I like the textures they give it lots of character, It would be great as part of a scene, but as a stand alone graphic it might be a bit cumbersome.

Nice :)

Dull down and grubby up the nuts as they are to shiny and dominating the image.Maybe also after doing that raise the specular on the text to give it a bit more emphasis and make it stand out from the BG as its the name you want people to see.

Thanks for the comments. Kiwi, it's going to be incorporated into my home page design, and it's going to be smaller, so we'll have to see how it looks in context. I think you're right about the name needing to stand out more. I may change the color of the grunge on the letters--it's supposed to be worn-off paint.

I agree with Stu on the shinyness, I'm also wondering what it would like if it had countersunk rounded head screws instead of bolts ( dunno whether that termonology was correct :) they might not dominate so much then, its looking cool as it is though

Yeah, I think the bolts are too prominent too. I think I'll scale them down and tone down the texture and see how that looks. If it's a no-go I'll try some countersunk screws--good idea.

Adam,

Looks awesome so far!

Lot's of great comments above! Strong crit!

It just needs some old water stains around and under the bolts and letters. Some splatter would add to the mix as well to complete the look in my opinion.

The bolts are all screwed on too perfect. Some random ratation would be cool. Maybe even make one slightly off axis like it was thearded wrond?

The "tm" looks a little flat. Not a big deal? Not sure. Also of note, the placement of your trade mark. Most are located on the upper right.

The gouges could use some more dirt in the deeper parts. Unless it's a fresh gouge which would then require a reveal of the underlying metal.

I'm looking forward to seeing more! :D

Thanks!

I thought about more grime, but I didn't want it to look *too* dirty. Still, I'll probably add more. Thought about come circular scratches from the socket around the nuts.

Yep, that was my intention. Right now it's just one bolt in two symmetry objects. :)

Correct.

Tried to get more specular on the gouges, but had a *bitch* of a time balancing the gouges and underlying bumpmap. I'll revisit it after I get over my huff. :annoyed:

Thanks for the suggestions--much appreciated.

Might consider making the grime on each bolt slightly different, and or rotate them slightly differently. I guess a logo shouldn't be so complicated, I don't know much about them myself, but I feel I would really like to see the little slot slit thing where you can peak through to see the fire inside the furnace. Or perhaps have a fiery light coming from an angle that indicates the heat and fire nearby. You definitely have a nice motif to work with there, but I would try to jazz it up some, give it a bit more drama as long as you're going 3D with the logo. Of course there is always a danger using any 3D object as a logo, as it often doesn't come off seeming as professional for some reason.

well if you want to stay "clean" I say it's finished, and well done... is this gonna be on a brick-like bg? what are the plans?

Counter sunk oooh good idea  ....I also thought maybe rivets might look good :)

I thought of another good idea too Adam {hope its a good idea ")} what about a really grimy back plate with rivets, looks worn and old, then on the front of that plate a nice shiny new plate with your name, and the new plate is welded over the top of the old one :) .........you could use Squids adventure with the buxom Playboy beauties pic as an environment image :D

MV: see posts above re: the bolts and future addition of orange glow. I thought about doing a straight 2D design, because I want to keep it nice and clean, but ultimately I thought it would be weird for a website offering strictly 3D services to have no 3D elements in the design.

Kiwi & Adrian: in the overall design I'll have the plate at the upper-left of the page (it'll be smaller). It's going to be mounted on the lower corner of the "furnace", as you often see nameplates mounted on industrial equipment. Somewhere on that image (haven't decided yet) there's going to be four screw-down electrical posts with wires connected. The wires will run down to the main text of the page. I admit it's a little odd that a furnace would be generating electricity directly, but that's just the way my furnace works! It's a little hard to describe, but I think it's going to look nice. Naturally I'll be wanting ya'lls input before it goes live. :buttrock:

The want to be Allen oh wait, even better, tamper proof, or spanner, or Torx...Something GIVE ME SOMETHING............Had to throw a designer line in there some where. My last job had this designer, and that was her favorite line, "It want's to be ___________"...Drove me nuts...
